I am considering changing filters for my 6'x2'x2' aquarium from 2 Biolife internal filters to an Eheim external filter. I was wondering which model people here would recommend. It will be mainly community fish (no large ones), I was also wondering if it would be best to go for one of the thermofilters in their range so as to have as minimal "clutter" in the tank as possible to give a more natural environment and look.
Any advice would be much appreciated. Thanks |

I have one of the old eheim bucket filters I can't fault it the old eheim 2250 is rated for 1,000 litres and costs £139 from surrey pet supplies. Alternatively go for one of the newer models the pro 3 replaces the eheim bucket filters.
As an alternative media to ehfi substrat you could try alfagrog it costs about £15 for a 20 kilo bag and it has a huge surface area.
Going with big canisters like these you might need to put a coarse sponge over the intake of the pump just to stop small fish being sucked into it. |

Dare I suggest that you get a Fluval FX5 - superb filter. |

Thanks, I only was thinking of Eheim as someone said that they were the better filters around, how does the Fluval FX5 compare with eheim? |

Burn the hagen
burn the hagen
burn the hagen
burn the hagen
You get the picture.
Thank you hagen for killing loads of fish thanks to a power cut thank you also for killing some of my marine inhabitants courtesy of poor engineering also thank you for flooding my lounge.
Thank you Eheim for showing me the way! |

lee could i tell you about my tetratec 1200,it cost me £85 with all the media supplied, this is running on my frontosa tank(5x18"x15")it is virtually silent, and the water quality is second to none(see pic).my mate runs an ehiem 2226 which is good but nowhere near the tetratec

yeah seen a few other brands such as the tetratec, but was wondering which is best, after reading MCs links, i'm still stuck with choice as people seem to have issues with both, but if spare parts are an issue then I think it must be Eheim as don't want to be spending £180 every year or so. |

You have to stick with the german kit nothing gets near it,it will cost more to buy but in the long run nothing else comes close just my opinion as an ex fishkeeper. |

giles, i agree with you prior to the fx5, but now with the fx5 fluval are surpassing eheim. |

We will see with the FX5 in a couple of years this is when the in built obsolescents seems to kick in. Just my opinion!
If you are on a budget you can still get the eheim classics cheaper than a fluval with the engineering of a bentley as opposed to the engineering of a fiat. |

There are at least a dozen keepers that i know that have been running the same Eheim cannister filter for the last 20 years without any trouble.
Maybe every few years they replace the impeller, but they have done this more out of servicing the filter than having to.
30 years on you can still get Eheim spare parts. |

Looks like an Eheim 2128 is the way to go then just in case anything goes wrong, sorry FX5 fans. |

Ok back to this again, do I go 2128 thermo or a 2329 thermo?
Basically pro 2 or a wet/dry version |

lee, i just ordered myself an ehiem 2028-85 FW/marine resistant with thermo for £182.00,i'm taking the plunge after reading a lot of pros & cons about Fluval etc versus Eheim, and as one member said Fluval parts will be obsolete when they bring another model out,and since i have been researching these filters, especially Eheim,i have not heard or read one bad word about Eheim,so i definitely go for Eheim just choose the right one for your needs or the next one up.You can get the cheapest one from Surrey Pet Supplies, hope this helps in your decision. |
