should you or can you use under gravel/ substrate filters in a marine setup

u can use the old under gravel filters with coral gravel then gravel tidy and coral sand u will keep fish with this method ok but would be better with sump &mud system

Depends on what you want really fish or reef.

These can work well but if you do go down this line I would suggest you opt for a reverse flow under gravel this will keep detritus build up to a minimum you will still need to siphon through the substrate virtually weekly.

A better option is to set up a DSB but there are risks and it is far harder than you would think equally the tank has to be stocked very carefully or you could inadvertently introduce predators that will eventually kill the DSB.
