I have a 75 gallon marine and reef tank. I seemed to have developed a problem in the last few weeks which has resulted in my corals dying and a brown algea over live rock. I thought at first problem with corals might have been due to low salinity or low temperature (was at 21c). My test results are: temp 26.2c, salinity 1.019, iron 0, phosphate 10, nitrate 10, nitrite, ammonia 0, carbonated hardness 70. Not sure what could have affected coral and how I get rid of all the brown algea? Any ideas much appreciated. Thanks

have you undertaken any larger weater changes recently. i had to only do 20% maximum water changes, any more and I had the same problem - there seems some nutrient in mains water that the brown algae thrive on.

thanks for the reply. I probably do a 10%-15% water change on a weekly basis but I also have an automatic top up tank. I get all of my water out of an RO unit i have had for 9 months. Do you suggest I change water less frequently? I also have a ultra violet water sterliser i bought 3 months ago.

hi i think your problem is a diatom bloom you need to test for phosphate if there are signs of it get some phosphate remover(phosgaurd, rowaphos) that will stop it

Would that cause problems to the coral as well?

This is what you should aim for parameter wise.

Temp 24c
Phosphate maximum 0.02 ppm if it is 10 ppm this will be causing algae problems as well as preventing the corals laying down any new skeleton.
Nitrate 10 ppm should be no problem but it would be better if it was lower.
Ammonia and nitrite 0 fine

Carbonate hardness 8-9 gh not sure what you mean by 70

What is your ph should be around 8.2.

Can you run through all the eequipment you have on the tank and how long has the tank been running.
