if this is the case how long is it goin to take before the internal one becomes mature and i can add more livestock, beacuse i rackon the 104 will only cope with 3 fish in the trigon 350

have you got the instructions John? If not you might be able to get the answer to your query on the net |

It would take a few weeks for the internal filter to mature but are you going to be using live rock?
If so put at least 38 kilos of live rock in there you will actually need no other biological filtration.
Are you going to be putting a protein skimmer on the system?
Another way of speeding up the maturation of the internal filter is to put some media from the 104 in the juwel filter this will immediately seed the internal filter and it should start to mature very quickly.
Otherwise it is just a case of waiting without seeding I would say 2 months would be a reasonable amount of time for the internal to catch up but with seeding from media in the 104 I would say a month.
I would suggest a pyjama wrasse as your first fish it is reef safe and not overly territorial except towards other wrasses, its a very nice little fish.
Skimmer wise if you have not yet bought one there are a number to consider but go for the best you will regret it if you don't either tunze or deltec.
You could remove the juwel filter altogether and put an internal skimmer in its place the tunze skimmers are very tidy and very good or you could go for a hang on I wouldn't go for a prizm a lot of people seem to have problems with these try a deltec hang on skimmer.
If I was setting up a juwel 350 as a marine reef I would do the following:
Put a good high quality skimmer on the tank tunze or deltec rated to at least 1 and a half times the tank volume possibly more.
Add at least 40 kilos of live rock but I would probably ultimately aim for 50 kilos.
I would put a couple of seio pumps in there and aim to turn over the total water volume over 40 times an hour.
The internal filter would either be removed altogether and if I did this I would use the 104 for a phosphate remover and nothing else I certainly would not allow it to become biologically active. Or if I left the juwel internal in place I would put the rowaphos in there and again no other media to prevent it becoming biologically active. I wouldn't bother with the external at all if I did this.
Lighting I would go for as many T5's as I could fit in the hood or alternatively modify the hood to take a 250 watt metal halide as well as a couple of T5 actinics.
The live rock and circulation pumps would provide all the biological filtration and the skimmer would remove about 80-90% of the protein produced by the inhabitants of the tank.
Hope that gives you an idea. |
