Nige - this question has been asked many many times and there are numerous long threads on this site relating to them
But in order to pre-empt the fanatics, Eheim I believe are quite good.
You can also check out the comparison shop link at the top of the page to compare prices |

I too would be interested in any answers, prob no harm in asking even if has been covered in threads before, am sure the same questions get asked a few times on here over the months!!! So if anyone could answer Nige I was also be grateful, i am wondering what the best external for a 350 litre approx is that i just got, normally i use Fluval 4's but no way can i get away with that on a 5 footer |

Lexter fluval 4 internal?
Lex/Nige
For a 5' tank you definately need an external that does about 1000lph
Theres plenty to chose from and if on a buget and cant entertain Ehiem, try one of the larger Fluvals (lots of debate re reliabilty) or check out some of the ones on sale on ebay etc
Here's my recommendation for a budget filter that works well, I have two of them. Very quiet, loads of media but stated flow a bit "iffy" but enough for your tank

Its a case of comparing fluvals and eheim classics then eheim wins hands down on price reliability and availability of spare parts.
Fluval externals in my experience last a few years eheim classics quite literally decades I have one with all original parts that wasn't a classic when the original owner got it its over 10 years old and works as good as new plus the bottom fill design prevents air locks and it starts first time every time with power cuts I have lost hundreds of pounds worth of stock because fluvals often do not start first time.
Incidentally I run an eheim 2250 that holds 10 litres of media and purports to handle a tank up to 1,000 litres the fluval FX5 purports to handle a larger tank 1,500 litres I think yet only has capacity for 5.9 litres of media there is something wrong with someones calculations I believe. |
