Hello anyone have any tips for sexing A. compressiceps dwarf samba I bought what i thought was a pair based on there behaivior in the shops, but would'nt you know i get them home and everything changes, They are settled in quite well for wild fish, eating and displayig to each other, one it is significantly larger than the other, the smaller of the 2 has many more brown virtical strips than the larger, the larger is very pale the strips are only visable when he is defending his shell. (witch is most of the day!)
Any help appreciated |

Hi Warren
I have a breeding pair of sumbu compressiceps (dwarf) at the moment. With my pair the female guards the shell with the male always close by, even when there is fry in the shell the female appears to do most of the defensive work. My male is slightly larger and darker with a more angled head shape (small hump almost) than the female. Other than that there is not much in it. Mine did not display much at all. I had 2 males and one female and she just picked which male she wanted and that was that. Anyway hope this helps. |

Stephanie, great to hear that you have a pair. I love Comps, but not yet managed to get a pair. I put what seemed to be a pair together, but open warefare broke out (2 males i think).
Have you managed to rear young yet?
Would be great to see a pic.
Are you going to add your intro page, so we can find out more about you? |

Hi Yanton
Nice to hear from you again, I had tried for a long time with the normal compressiceps, I had a wild pair of yellow chaikita, they live quite happily in separate tanks, the male? just battered the female? relentlessly still do have them but they are going in the BCA auction next month. Pity cause a cracking pair, I have had them separated for about 4 months and never tried putting them back together cause my sumbu bred. No problems with aggression here, had the female for a year or so, spotted some males in wholesale tropicals 3 months ago and hey presto. The Fry i have at the moment are about 3 wks old and still pretty small so no photos yet.
dont know if this works but try it anyway

Yanton how are the fish you got from chaplin associates? |

They are all very healthy and look superb.
The frontosa have got a bit bigger.
I had to get rid of the daffodil brichardi (gave away to a keen hobbyist) as they started to get territorial. They have left me a bunch of babies though.
Leleupi are very nice, and the ahli pair is magnificent.
My latest aquisitions are:
Copadichromis Pleurostigma Kande x 3
Aulonacara Usisya x 2
Labeotropheus Fulleborni redtop Makanjila x 4
Aulonocara Stuartgranti Hansbaenschi x 2
Metriaclima Zebra Gold Nkhata Bay Kawanga x 2
Pseudotropheus Estherae Mozambique x 5
Labeotropheus Firecracker x 2
Copadichromis Chrysonotus Azures Mbenji x 2
All are wild caught and magnificent.
The Pseudotropheus Estherae Mozambique are some of the only Red Zebra WILD fish in the UK. Superb colour, with natual blue males and tangerine coloured females.
The Copadichromis Pleurostigma Kande are very nice, with silver bodies and yellow finnage.
As for the Copadichromis Chrysonotus Azures Mbenji male, I have never seen such a beautiful hap before, he makes my chilumba peacocks look dull by comparison.
I'll try and take some pics. |

Pics would be great, nice collection you have there, are they insured? LOL. how many tanks do you have and are you in any cichlid clubs? |

I have 2 6ft tanks and a couple of fry tanks.
At present I have some venustus babies which I have been giving away, and some pink lavender peacocks, about half cm long.
No time to belong to a club. There are very few rift valley cichlids fans around Somerset, it seems we are a rare breed indeed. |

Is Amersham far from Somerset? Just asking cause there is the British Cichlid Association Convention next month, they have a big auction and some class speakers.
