does anyone keep red tilapia? |

hello. i have just aquired 2 red tilapia along with some other cichlids. I think they are very ugly (no snide remarks please). have looked on the net for info on them and what i have found seems to be more rounded in shape and a lot nicer to look at. I now feel that the 2 i have, have been seriously under fed. can anyone shed any light on this. If so how can I feed them more without over feeding the other tank occupants. and what type of food, ie, prawns |

Looks like an oreochromis not sure which as I don't think it is a natural colour form. They will eat anything and in large quantities they are very hardy to. |

Oreochromis mossambicus is a tilapia alan. just done a search for your suggestion and it came up as mossambicus tilapia. |

Yes Oreochromis is a tilapia there are a number of different species as this is a gold colour morph it is difficult to work out which. Massambicus is the most common in the trade as it is farmed as a food fish it does also have this gold colour varient but I expect there are other species that also do mossambicus is certainly a possibility. |

Erm no not really although I think they might be going through a bit of a revival their breeding behaviour is fascinating.
Danny boy can tell you more about these wee beasties incidentally how big are they? |

Prawns tend to be a bit fatty so use them as a treat once a week, whitebait and cockle/mussel should be good though with some green stuff thrown in for good measure (spirulina, cucumber, peas). Looks like Oreochromis mossambicus to me, though I am no expert. Mouthbrooders and a good food fish. |

haha, from broadgreen myself, but in s-port now. my mate gave me his setup as he had no space, i already have a few tanks myself that i am just setting up. said for last 18 months would like another tank and in the space of a week have ended up with 6. telapia came with tho other fish and took them on as i thought my mate was fond of them, bit suprised to find out when he was going that he actually hated them, so dont want to be stuck if i dont have to be |

Somewhere like Maidenhead Aquatics would prob take them off you for store credit at the very least, thats if you decide not to keep them. Bit too big and ugly looking for my liking. Ha! Ha! Just joking! |

to solve my dilemma with the tilapia do you think they would be ok living in the fish pond with the gold fish? |
16-03-2006 13:40 by Alan
|
No but if you find an out fall from a power station the water might be warm enough for them there. Only joking they probably would survive there but you would risk prosecution.
They wouldn't survive with your goldfish have a ring around of your LFS see if they will take them off your hands it is unlikely you will get anything for them. |
