How many fish should I buy? |

I am going to be placing an order for some malawi fish for my new tank on friday. I was wondering how many fish I should get. The tank is a Juwel 240 with a fluval 304, ehiem pro 2 thermofilter, and a large sump. I have been told to over-stock the tank but how many fish would you call over-stocked?
Thanks for your help,
Joe |

Joe, i know you know your stuff, but have you matured the filter etc mate???? |

Yup, im fine in that department. All of the filters are mature, some of the gravel will be coming from my other tanks so will have beneficial bacteria. Plus the tank will not be fully stocked for quite a few months yet.
Im spending around £800 on this tank so im doing as much research as possible. |

Well it's not just for the tank. The tank and stand are going to cost me around £250 and then the rest is on equipment and fish.
When we move house in about a years time I hope to buy a 150 gal tank and work my way up. |

Be aware that your filters are not fully mature, each time you put new fish in you will increase the biload of the tank and the filter bacteria will have to increase in population to cope with this. Putting 20 fish in and your filter will not cope. Ideally you should put all fish in at once but this is not possible in reallity - add them 6-10 at a time. More peaceful ones first
As to stock if you are keeping Mbuna I would go for a total stock of about 30- 35. You will need to get aother filter as well as the jewel one to cope with this amount of fish though. |

So are you saying a fluval 304, ehiem pro 2 thermofilter, and a large sump are not enough? |

|
nope - I did not read the bit about the filteration. Yours will be fine. |
