In the immediate term, do some water changes, about 20% every few days.

Assuming this is a freshwater (not marine) aquarium, as Rob says, add some plants that naturally feed on nitrates. There are plenty on sale here

having the same problem myself. and from a good source it has been recomended to do regular water changes. plants may help in some cases but not in all. what set up do you have, mine is mbuna and plants would not last five minutes.

ooops sorry fagans.

In that case, do you have some live rock in there? the anearobic areas within the rock hold nitrate handling bacteria. I found a nice deep coral gravel bad also helped in the same way.

As said though, in the short term, water changes are the answer.

What are your fish stocking lvels like?

There is a few marine plants you could get, go on ebay theres quite a few. However depending on what fish you have it could just turn out to be an expensive meal.

I've just read what fish you have and they should all be compatable with plants.

I dont agree with huge water changes for marine if the fish look ok little and often i have found in my opinion think of the fish what a huge shock you will give them you will never get the PH and the salanity bang on with huge changes also reduce your feed

Here are a few Caulerpa, it sounds from your stock list that the plants should not be eaten, maybe nibbled a bit by the dwarf angel.

not sure about marine, but Tetra Easy Balance has bought my nitrate right down, i am always scpetical about supplements like that but it works on all my tanks, and i test weekly, until i used Easy Balance my nitrate was always in the RED on the test (aquarium pharmaceuticals) but now is always in the orange, at a guess, i thinks it gone from 80 to 40, perhaps even lower than 40
STRANGELY tho, i used Tetra Nitrate Minus for a few weeks before and it did nothing.
Obviously one thing to bear in mind is that you should give atleast 3-4 weeks before you make a judgement on such a supplment

How high is your high nitrate and can you give a full breakdown of your set up down to the media used in you filters and how many kilos of live rock you have and if you have a sump or not.

Reduce the amount you feed, do you have a skimmer ? if not buy one at least twice the capacity needed, this will help to reduce your nitrates
