dont some table salts also have anti-caking agents in them?
probably best the other way around, use marine salt for flavouring your chips |

johnlakehouse - salt can also come from other sources but as long as it is pure its OK.
I have just treated my pond with salt as a pre-season precaution for emerging parasites and the cheapest salt I have found is Dishwasher Salt £1.25 for 2kg

try using dishwasher tablets, i believe powerball are good, they also help to keep the glass shiny and algae free |

MC, interesting, i always thought it was a bit of a "sting" when I see salt in fish stores thats is 10000% mark up
Sometimes i like to use a salt dip on fish.... MC, in your opinion could i just use standard sea salt??? |

You can but it does contain other minerals.
Dishwasher salt it has to be 99.99% pure in order to soften the water and not clog up the water softening filter with other materials |

so dishwasher salt is a good alternative to getting "mugged" in the fish store?? |

Ahhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh!!!!!!!!!!!!!
The only salt to use in a marine aquarium is the proper stuff absolutely nothing else the synthetic salts are a blend of around 90 possibly more minerals to as closely replicate sea water as possible the best I have used is TMC pro reef its well worth paying the extra for or alternatively reef crystals if your budget is tight.
As far as adding salt to a freshwater tank as a remedy for fungus or to handle stress dish washer salt is good as it is 99% pure sodium chloride I have used it myself but never and I mean never consider using this on a marine aquaria you will kill everything. |

noooooooooooooo dont use dish washer salt...wish we could as it would be cheap...but dont do it |

As far as adding dishwasher salt to a marine tank definately not but steve are you also saying no to adding dishwasher salt as a remedy for freshwater fish? If so why as this is 99% pure sodium chloride and as such is ideal as a freshwater remedy for reducing stress and treating fungus I would be interested to hear your arguement for not using dishwasher salt in freshwater aquaria I would like to make it clear as well there is a big difference between dishwasher powder a detergent and dishwasher salt sodium chloride. |

yes, i question whether dishwasher salt has all the carefully measured out trace elements required for healthy marine fish. |
20-03-2006 19:35 by stevebrillo
|
no i thought the dishwasher salt was being added to a marine tank not a freshwater tank which might be okay, but in a marine tank it just wouldnt have the right trace elements. little joke backfired on me. |
