try a air stone to brack it up |

air stone is not the answer too much air in the water affects marine fish and can cause bubbles in the gills, better to put a powerhead closer too the surface to keep the water surface moving |

usually lack of surface agitation, i hate scum |

The cause is insufficient surface agitation with a protein build up at the surface.
Do you have a protein skimmer on the tank?
You may well need to add one if you don't already have one equally agitating the surface with a pump would be good but the build up may point to an overall lack of circulationin the tank ideally you want to be shifting about 20 times the tank volume of water every hour. |

i had the same problem with my mbuna tank,I did what Alan has suggested and agiteted the water surface more, within a few days the surface is crystal clear. |
