AQUARIUM SALT, HOW MUCH??? |

Am currently quarenteening adult guppies, mollies and platies, they are in 30 litres of water, with a Fluval internal running and a temp of 82F, purcahsed them yesterday, about 12-15 fish in total.
Got some "proper" aqaurium salt, cant remember the name, the man in the shop reckons about 1 teaspoon for every 2 gallon / 9 litres for quarenteening purposes (anti parasite purposes),
Thus far i have just put half a teaspoon into the 30 litres.
How much should i go for, considering i will quarenteen for 1-2 weeks and the type of fish in there???
ALSO IMPORTANT, i presume the salt level will stay the same unless i do a water change? Presume that if i put too much salt in will just accumlate out of control????
please advise, thanks |

I have the interpet aqua tonic salt and use 1 level teaspoon for every gallon (4.5 litres) or 1 level tablespoon for every 3 gallons (13.5 litres) when you water change you will have to measure how much water you remove and add salt to the new water accordingly. |

that makes sense Von, was reading on net, the usual dose is 1 teaspoon per gallen (4.5 litre), but considering am only doing it for 1-2 weeks and its to quarenteen quite hardy livebeaers was thinking how high i could reasonable go if i stagger it????

i read somewhere that a salt bath will get rid of stuborn whitespot.
One of my loaches (poor thing) has a spot right on the end of his nose... can a salt bath help him? how does loaches react to salt? |

I wouldn't add any more than that, personally i wouldn't risk it.
I don't known about loaches but i know catfish don't like it. |

hi anna, gonna keep it at 28c / 82f, i get your point, guppies can be perfectly happy even at room temp really (20-22). But as part of my strict quarenteening procedures to combat the local IF's trying to contaminate my tanks (Paranoia creeping in???) I keep my new fish at 82F for the first week in quarenteening, my belief is that fights parasites well combined with salt. And for white spot it (if there is white spot coming my way due to IF;s) obviously 82F speeds up the cycle of the parasite and it developes quicker and hence treatment time is shortened.
Fortunuately for me i have never lost a guppy in quarenteen yet, and this must include 20 or so guppies
I did lose a platy once, but that was in my early days, I used head and shoulders and gave it a shampoo, these days my quarenteening procedures are more realistic |

yeh, no sign of dandruff after that, but i should have only shampoo'd half the platy like they do on the adverts then i could have proved it works!!! |
