just had the same problem, no easier way, water changes every other day, and I have put a media in the filter called, cleanwater. the nitrates have gone from critical to 12.5 in the space of 10 days, thats good as it comes out of my taps at 25. dont forget to condition your water each time. you can also get liquid treatments that will reduce your nitrates very quickly but then you may have to rely on these chemicals to keep your water nitrates free, for some time. water changes are much better and your tank will soon sort itself out, with very little help.

Tetra Easy Balance has helped get mine down from 80 to 30ppm, but it takes 4-6 weeks to kick in

In circumstances or where your tap water has high nitrate levels, nitrazorb in your filters does the trick but is expensive. Alternatively, Tetra Nirate minus liquid or granular)does the trick and can be used at every water change (approx £5-£6 worth treats 1000 litres)

torquay has a high nitrate in the water. I used those nitrazorb bags like MC said, but yes they are expensive.

All i did in the end was leave my tank and it sorted itself out.

But then again i dont use water testing kits.

Are we talking marine if so describe your set up if we are talking freshies the above suggestions are sound.

I will say this though if you are keeping marines and you are not purifying the tap water that is your problem get yourself an RO unit and your problems will go away.
