it seems a good distance to travel to, especialy for you steph. |
03-04-2006 18:23 by Danny Boy
been to one of these before. you wont see me wasting my time again.. they are run in the dark ages by old men. its embarrassing to see.. |
04-04-2006 09:44 by Stephanie
Yes Tony dont think I will be getting much sleep saturday night with bagging fish and all! |
04-04-2006 09:47 by Stephanie
Thats a bit harsh danny considering your statement suggests you have only been to one! The quality of the talks is generally very good so I can only assume you are not a cichlid hobbyist! |

Hi Stephanie,I emailed them to ask what Mbuna would be available and got a rather high handed reply, that she could not tell me as it could influence the bidding on fishes? yet I know that members have had a preview of the listings. Is it that old british thing of the 'club' and the rest of us,Amersham is a good distance from me and if I don't know what is available is it worth the time and expense of going? After all they are wanting to sell to the public so why the cloak and dagger attitude, perhaps Danny has a point. |

hello ray. lets put it one way mate, your a lot closer to it than steph, steph is in merseyside, and this b.c.s show is near london, isnt it? If i am right, then it is along way to travel for a chancer. |
04-04-2006 10:45 by tony mcculloch
sorry, will re word that, not calling YOU a chancer steph, i mean your taking a chance on getting the fish you want. |
04-04-2006 10:49 by Ray
Yes Tony I know what you mean, but I am only interested in finding species I want,I have never heard of an auction before where the items for sale are a secret, not having a go at Stephanie in any way,I dont do that. |
04-04-2006 10:55 by tony mcculloch
no sorry if i gave you that impression bud, it doesnt look like your having a go at steph at all. I am intreaged as to why people would travel that far for an uncertainty. was actualy agreeing with your point ray. have never been to an auction of anykind except ebay, and i never win on that one, someone always has more money than me. sorry bud, wasnt on the deffensive. |

I drove to milton keynes the other week for 16 fish, it was a 12 hour day getting there, time there looking at fish, and driving home. when i got there i realised that the whole journey etc was not worth the 16 fish that i was getting, with losses of fish on the journey home etc, so i ended up buying over 53 fish to cover the losses and ensure that i had a better chance of having males and females. |

No worries fella, but if I am going to spend £20.00 on petrol £7.50 entrance and £1.00 on a programe I want to know what I can buy.Lord in grumpy old man mode today, gonna go out and find a life |
04-04-2006 13:38 by Stephanie
Yes Ray I see your point if thats the reply you got, and maybe if this is what Danny is talking about then maybe he has a point also if you are going for the auction. But I know they have some real good speakers which for myself and some mates is why we are going, and to make a bit of cash of course, there is definately more money to be had down south. As a member I dont see a problem with giving the public a sneak preview of whats in store (thats all we get as members), epecially if it brings people to the auction. |

my point was that its need modernisation. the shows are much like you'd expect from the 40's. they need a new lease of life. i probably shouldnt make the call from one show but with speaking with friends on the net and some on this very forum i was warned about the shows being very clique and anorakish and the people were correct. am i right in thinking the BCS dont even have a web site forum??? its madness for any club to not have a forum where its members can chat and consult. i was asked buy a similar club if id like to join the memebership. i asked what the website was so i could have a look and they didnt have one!! can you imagine! |
04-04-2006 15:05 by James_L
The BCA do have a forum, its on britishcichlid.com If someone is going to be slagging them off its better if they have the right information. I do agree tho it is very out-dated, and normally based on one person's views. People who have been before probably know who this person is.
04-04-2006 16:02 by Ray
It would be interesting to have a point of view from someone in the BCS,negative contact with a genuine enquiry is not the way to promote a club,or boost membership especially when their advert says 'email for more information'. |
04-04-2006 17:02 by Stephanie
I think I could hazard a guess at who this one person is!!!!!!!!!! But I have met a lot of interesting people via the BCA Conventions which is another reason why I continue to be a member and go to the conventions, at the last one they had a speaker on west african cichlids (Anton Lamboj) who was fantastic. But these things can be very clickish, but this is no different for any club/organisation, sometimes its hard to change things from the inside when you are one voice, but its even harder to change things and very easy to criticise if you are on the outside looking in!
anyway hope to see some people there. |
04-04-2006 17:28 by James_L
I'll probably be there, I'm a member too but do feel very excluded from the 'in-groups'. I really think they need a new team of new cichlid fans to run it, with new ideas that fit the times we live in! And yes Steph there are some good people there, last convention i was sitting next to Graham Smith (tropheus breeder) and had a great time. |

What fish are you putting into the auction steph?
05-04-2006 09:54 by Stephanie
Just tangs mainly, with some west africans and victorians, my other half is putting in some south and central americans. |
05-04-2006 10:02 by Stephanie
well we are not what you would call in the 'in-crowd' and I do agree some new blood on the committee would be very welcome. It really needs some fresh air breathing into it. |
05-04-2006 16:27 by Danny Boy
im young and vibrant with lots of new ideas but alas im too argumentative and busy repping locally for other clubs |
05-04-2006 17:29 by Ray
What clubs Dan? |
05-04-2006 21:01 by Danny Boy
not fish ones mate. car ones. the only one i know down here is redhill society but its almost empty as a fish keepers club. |
05-04-2006 22:00 by Ray
Pity quite fancy sitting in a damp school room swapping stories of how fishkeeping was better years ago, and how young fishkeepers have no respect anymore |

The BCS shows are by far the best, most informative shows you can ever think of attending
As for "the old men" theory, they have been there and done it
Surely this is the best way to learn about species you intend to keep Top notch keepers guys, you can't ask for any better
I knowpeople that travel down from Scotland,so i guess it speeks for itself |
