Has anyone found that when mbuna complete the cycle of brooding, and release their fry, that the no-eating instinct is so strong, that they just dont get eating again and just wither away, despite good food and water conditions?
I have found this with a mbuna and also a venustus recently, they just dont get back to eating. Anyone else had this problem?
By stark contrast, my red zebra brooding female, is eating small peices of flake whilst holding her babies - anyone noticed this in their cichlids?
I have found that some females are particularly adept at eating while holding and others are not. I have had the withering proplem with some female cyps so now I keep the female with other females in a 'community' tank for a month or so after she has released fry and before I re-introduce male. They do seem to get back to their eating habbits this way.
Hello Yanton, same here I have a Crabro that will eat while holding,as to fasting qite a lot of Mbuna will not eat for a while the worst that I have are Yellow labs,I use a similar method to Stephanie and keep females in a tank together for a time till they are plump again, before they go back to the main tank, again the labs fast the longest and take the most time to recover, try a little chopped prawn,i use this as a treat and it seems to get them going, good luck fella.
