I'm finding more and more empty turbo snail shells in my tank.... will blue leg hermits eat the snails? or maybe red leg?
Nothing else in tank other than those that maybe killing them...
cheers

Are the hermits using the shells now? How big are the snails and do you use RO snails are very sensitive to metal contaminants. |

How big are the snails in relation to the hermits.
I have had problems with red scarlet hermits before they are often sold as red legs not dwarf red legs which have blue and red legs.
Hope that made sense.
I doubt water quality is the problem, how hot is the tank also how big are the water changes you do snails are very susceptable to osmotic shock. |

My Temp is between 77 and 80... depending on house temp. 20-30% fortnightly, top up with RO every two days.... water is checked at 0 TDS.
The crabs are pretty small as i bought a load for like a pound each from an online store.
All there is Ed is a shell..... thats it.... no sign of anything...? |

Dave i put 300 snails and crabs in my tank i think the crabs were having a great time with the snails and not only ate them but swopped the shells as well.I found both hard to keep but could keep any type of fish ,what you see in the pics is whats left of the 3 hundred. |

Whats that in celsius the temp shouldn't ideally go above 24degC
Turbos are sensitive to long periods at to higher temperature I lost 30 once due to a hot spell absolute nightmare. Recently I had one cook itself under my metal halides. |

Blimey Ed what did you do?
Ed you mentioned I while back I think that you don't use RO water and use water straight out of the tap (I maybe way off on this one) anyway Tap water generally is fine for the fish but the inverts are very sensitive to heavy metals especially copper that could be the cause, just a thought though I could be wrong.
Hermits are indestructable make sure anny you get are confirmed as reef safe some turn into massive destructive beasts that will eat fish. You could also add a handful of mithrax crabs and if your tank has enough algae growth and detritus a sea urchin would be good for keeping the rock work clean. |

Yes alan i think you could be right on that one .I bought a crab about a year ago and it grew to a huge size it drove me mad with banging its shell against the glass all night while looking for food maybe it munched its smaller cousins,i do not have any more tanks as i sold the marine as i am moving but the next tank that is going to be a beast. |
