What goes with Angels and convicts ? |
07-04-2006 21:04 by Zoe
I have a new tank with 3 largish angels (approx 3 inches), have also put in 4 baby convicts 2 are about 1 inch, and two tiny ones about half an inch, are these ok together, they seem fine so far ? What else could i add ? |

This is one for lexter the convict king.I'd reckon those convicts won't take long to find those angels more than just tank mates, but i'll bow to lexters' greater convict wisdom! |

thank you |

trouble is i dont know much about Angels.... in my experience with young Convicts, because they are smaller than the angels if they do (ever) give grief it shouldnt happen for quite a while. I have not experienced young convicts (less than 1 inch) giving grief to any fish bigger than them (except they may try to "take on" one of their bigger siblings)
if the angels can catch the tiny convicts it might be the angels doing the "out of the count" move!!!!
if your angels are 3" and your convicts are half inch, you got a good few weeks or months before any problems, and even then one thing you got going for oyu, is that the convicts are growing up with the angels and the angels will always be bigger (atleast for a year or two i guess)

yes i've just been reading how inch for inch they're about as mean as they come ! man in the shop said they'd be fine because they're tiny they'd grow up with the angels and get used to them, saw the blonde coming didn't he ! |
07-04-2006 21:21 by Lexter
scrub the comment about "weeks" i think based on the size factor it will be the angels if anything to keep an eye on |
07-04-2006 21:22 by Lexter
blondes are very welcome on the forum Zoe, especially ones that keep Convicts! |
07-04-2006 21:23 by Lexter
just dont put any fish in the tank that are smaller than the convicts are, I found my 4 week old convicts eating my 1 week old convicts last weekend!!! |
07-04-2006 21:23 by Zoe
hoping to add some young yellow lab, what to you think ?
07-04-2006 21:23 by Zoe
i'd have trouble finding anything smaller than these they're tiny, i've seem bigger neons !
07-04-2006 21:24 by Lexter
people will tell you not to mix Malawi with American cichlids, some of that can be diet related. I think the colour contrast would be great, BUT..... as i said people will advise against it, the yellow lab should be a big bigger but not too big or they may attack the convicts!!!
PS - is this going to be a planted tank Zoe??? |
07-04-2006 21:25 by Zoe
can't believe they're charging £20-£25 for 2 inch parrots at Crews Hill, my biggest is 10 inches now, she's constanly laying eggs. |
07-04-2006 21:27 by Zoe
don't knoe at the moment just rocks, what do you think ? Quit new to cichlids myself (apart from our beloved parrot fish family) |
07-04-2006 21:27 by Lexter
i go to Crews Hill a lot, thats RIDICULOUS price for a 2" parrot, stay clear of that shop then!!!
i hear parrot eggs NEVER hatch |
07-04-2006 21:28 by Zoe
no they don't something to do with them being a hybrid, mind you some people say they have had fry so who knows - they must come from somewhere |
07-04-2006 21:29 by Zoe
all the shops were charging that price for parrots, went to 6 and the cheapest were £20 and really dodgy looking dyed blue and green |
07-04-2006 21:31 by Lexter
hate those dyed parrots, i find most parrots ugly enough as it is without being dyed!!! dont get me wrong have seen SOME attractive parrots, i like the big bright orange type, i had one once but it was not in the right set-up was 5" and i sold it Ray for £10, lovely fish |
07-04-2006 21:32 by Zoe
cichlids are quite expensive aren't they, we got 5 young 2"ish yellow labs from someone local for £10 last week then saw them exact same size for £9.50each today ! |
07-04-2006 21:34 by Zoe
our parrot are the big lovely natural orange ones, we had 6 but lost our first original one last week |
07-04-2006 21:35 by Lexter
that price sounds about right, convicts are cheap (ish) tho, Cichlids my favourite fish, Convicts, Kribensis, Firemouth, Blue Acara... I want to start getting into Sajica and related cihlids, my favourite type of cichlids are American |
07-04-2006 21:36 by Zoe
yes the convict were only £2 |
07-04-2006 21:37 by Lexter
i got convicts that size Zoe, would have charged you 75p each, i got 4 breeding pairs of convicts!!!! |
07-04-2006 21:37 by heros hero
No problem combining yellow labs with your convicts. My brother in law has a mixed cichlid tank with breeding green severum and a group of breeding yellow labs.Lexter,is there a way of controling the amount of territory that convicts try to take on? |
07-04-2006 21:38 by anna
Lexy ur becomin a bit of a specialist!!! |
07-04-2006 21:38 by Big Rob
yr lucky shops up here dont seem to sell cons when i ask they say to easy to breed |
07-04-2006 21:39 by anna
u should tell them that shouldn't sell guppies then either big Rob!!! what a poor reason!!
07-04-2006 21:41 by Lexter
hi anna |
07-04-2006 21:41 by Lexter
if convicts are breeding, dpeends on the temperament, mine insist on woning 97% of the tank, so most of my breeding pairs are in their own (small) set-up, can depend on the temprament of the convict, its the male whos usually the problem, but also the female can be a Bit@h as well
If they are not breeding is not nearly as much of a problem, if eggs are present they get aggressive and once the fry are free swimming my Convicts will demand the remaining 3% of the tank, want 100% then STILL not be happy.
Thing about Convicts when breeding, they attack IN ADVANCE of a threat, even if other fish are all huddle up in 10% of the tank, the Convict, especially the male will attack them even if they are posing NO threat... my experience is that it is not a sustained attack, but regular brief bombardments!!!!! |
07-04-2006 21:42 by heros hero
Lexter, got a pair of breeding sajica. They disappear into a hollow in a piece of bog wood and appear later with over 50 free swimming fry (obviously not in the same day!).They make very good parents, almost as agressive as your beloved convicts. |
07-04-2006 21:42 by Big Rob
guppys die easy cons last a lot longer so it takes longer to spend more in shops |
07-04-2006 21:44 by Lexter
love the idea of keeping Sajica Heros |
07-04-2006 21:44 by Lexter
hero, as for trying tp prevent ocnvicts from owning the tank when breeding, the only thing you can do (in my experience) if a have a tank that has LOADS of rocks, bog wood and hiding places for other fish, if you tank had LOADS of open space, the other fish will be hounded, until you remove the fry (the get extra hounded after that for a few hours, coz the convicts think the other fish have eaten the fry, but after a few hours some sense of order is restored)!! |
07-04-2006 21:45 by Lexter
sorry for my typing folks, too fast, need to s-l-o-w down, get over excited on CONVICT talk |
07-04-2006 21:46 by telboy
hi zoe,if i were you i wouldnt keep connies + angels together just too much finnage for them connies to resist ya may get away with it for a while but it wont be too long before youll have a tank of finless angels ya can keepyellow labs together as there par for par when it comes to aggression but they do have different needs ie water types food etc so i wouldnt recommend itive got a tank of 3 pairs breeding connies with 3 largeish tin foil barbs also in a 4fter ive got 2pairs connies with a texas cichlid they seem to get on ok but the texas is the guvoner im gonna try oscars + connies next ill let ya know how i get on |
07-04-2006 21:47 by Lexter
Convicts - can get some beauties, hardy, never had one die on me (except fry), loads of personality, excellent parents, love to dig up the sand (i find it amusing), cheap if you have to buy them, breed easy and regular, you can breed different colour types (albino with regular), |
07-04-2006 21:48 by Lexter
good point about the fins, i havent noticed my cons going for fins, they usally aint that specific to pick out one part of another fish, but Tel Boy may have a point |
07-04-2006 21:50 by heros hero
Zoe,you didn't say how big your new tank is.Lexter can tell you at what size they'll start breeding and whether there will be enough roomm for the angels to escape.Hope we've been of use to you o blonde one!!! |
07-04-2006 21:50 by Lexter
actually Tel Boy does have a point, one of VERY YOUNG convicts (about 1 cm) too the entire back fin of an expensive adult 3 cm guppy, within 20 secs of putting guppy in tank, people will say, why mix ocnvists with guppies, crazy... but these cons were soooo young and it was only for a day or so |
07-04-2006 21:50 by Lexter
got to sort my typing out |
07-04-2006 21:51 by Lexter

07-04-2006 22:01 by anna

07-04-2006 22:09 by Lexter
not at that age |
07-04-2006 22:10 by Lexter
Wayne seems to know, i have trouble, for me they have to be 1" and i need to see them interact before i know! |
07-04-2006 22:11 by telboy
zoe i wouldnt panic just yet as the connies are very small and they're only demonic once theyve spawned [all cichlids are aggressive some are worse than others]do ya know the sexes of the connies yet? |
07-04-2006 22:13 by Lexter
Convicts with free swimming fry will dominate fish twice their size |
07-04-2006 22:14 by telboy
males will have elongated dorsal+ anal fins+ are generally more blue in colour! females will develop an orangey/yellowey belly when sexually mature but i think yours are still a bit too young to sex 100% give it a couple of weeks! |
07-04-2006 22:14 by anna
get a fourth tank!!!! lololol |
07-04-2006 22:14 by Lexter
