Hi!!
I love the idea of getting a heros severum for our 48in by 15 by 12inch tank. We wanna keep a couple of other things in there too. My mate loves firemouths and I like Blue acaras, which of these would make the best tank mates? Could you keep a single male firemouth happily? We're definatley want a couple of interesting (crepsular?) catfish. perhaps humbug dorid. Does anyone have any interesting suggestions? Also are there any breeders of green severums near the suffolk area?
cheers!!

also... are there any other more suitable cichlids that can be kept with the severum in a tank this size?
I assume the severum will be fine and happy on his own.
and one more thing... cheers for the guy who had the severum idea..

hello, i keep 3 heros severums (red neck) in my 260L tank they are very territorial to each other. in the tank i got 4 plecos 5 monos, 5 blue acaras and one large parrot fish and a 10inch oscar. they all seem to be fine only the smaller fish seem to fight but not as bad to hurt each other there is alot of chasing. hope this helps u gonzo.

you may see aggression from the firemouths. buy them on the understanding that the fish shop will allow you to swap them at a later date if need be. the tank isnt the biggest and the severums will get a good size on them so be aware that while aan oscar will make a great tank mate there will be a size issue. have a look at the geophagus available. they will compliment the fish and use the bottom of the tank. they do need a nice sandy or very fine gravel substrate but i find them fascinating to keep and great as a clean up crew. look out for the geophagus surinamensis and deamons. they are widly avalable but avoid the red hump geophagus as they are aggressive.

Wow that geophagus is gorgeous, what a fish!! do they grow a bit too large for my 4ft tank?
do firemouths do well as solitary fish?

Oh boy, how did i miss this thread! Severum are best fish ever, got pair of red neck that look stunning in their breeding colors, they are dead friendly and hand feed quite happily.Got breeding pair of gold, trio of heros appendiculatos, pair of notatus and a red severum. They all have bundles of character and dead friendly with tankmates unless spawning.Keep a breeding pair of multispinosa, breeding pair of sajica, group of nicaraguense and a syno decorus.PH about 7 temp about 26c.If you wanna chat severum, i'm ya man!!

hi heros hero!!
are the red necks readily availiable? Are they really expensive? Do they do well on their own as solitary specimens in a community?

They often have red necks at my local maidenhead aquatics (northampton).Paid 120 for my pair and they are gorgeous.I don't have the space for a breeding set up so haven't been able to raise any of their fry.All severum are character fish and can be hand tamed like oscars. If you're looking to just keep a pair, i'd recommend keeping a small group of dither fish with them,i use silver tips as they are cheap and hardy.

I was hoping to keep them with firemouths and/or blue acaras with some interesting catfish in a 4ft tank (48X12X15).
I was thinking of dither fish too, can they be a little skittish?
They do seem quite expensive, but are stunning fish. Are they much cheaper if not paired?
I like the look of the green severum too, are they much cheaper?
Cheers!

green severum are very cheap since they are easy to breed and good parents,as are the gold ones.Firemouths and acara will be cool with them.I split my tank up with wood and piles of stone to create territories and they all get along fine. The red necks are a little more territorial than the others but nothing too serious.Given the chance they can grow very large (10 to 12 inch). In my experience they pair off very easily.

are the rednecks a natural species? or are they bred for the aquarium?
do you ever see wild severums (i wouldnt get a wild caught one), do they have nice colours?
i expect the gold ones are a tank bred colour, but i'm not as keen on them.
I also read that you should choose one that has good red eyes, is this true?
do the greens grow 10 to 12inches?
heh heh... so many questions..

I'll try to get my red necks to sit still for a picture and you'll see what they look like when they're trying to impress each other.Mine are wild caught but you'd have to ask your dealer. My lfs had a 10 inch mixed pair (1 red neck,1 green) that bred constantly in their display tank and were selling the (cross bred) young for something daft like 20 notes.I'm fairly sure the gold ones are a natural variety but constant breeding is weakening the colors. As i understand it the red eye thing applies to all cichlids, the closer they are to the wild strain, the brighter the red.Nice picture by the way yanton,is it one of yours?
