Posted Guppy Deaths
11-04-2006

About a month ago I bought 3 guppies. One of them 'wasn't right' from the start. It didn't swim with the others and spent most of its time at the top of the tank, it didn't feed and died after a week. Last week the second guppy started to behave in the same way and subsequently died. Any ideas? All my other fish are fine, my water is excellent and they showed no physical damage (the other fish ignored them).

singapore rot perhaps, it seems fairly common at the moment one of the main wholesalers (supplies pesta in hell and a lot of lfs's) seems to have a problem

too easy a solution just to blame breeding. we could say that for every question...

andrea. if i remember rightly you've been using this forum for a while now so im going to assume your tank is well cycled and you carry out regular water changes.

the first guppy that died sounds like it had shock. if you've ever put a fish dirtectly in to colder water than its used to it will do exactly this. it'll sit at the top, wont move, wont eat, will last a few days.

do you have anything else in the tank that may be aggressive to the fish? it'd be safe to assume fish can have pain inflicted on them without you noticing any marks.

you have one left though? is he ok?

Thanks All,
I am fanatical about my water changes and always ensure water temp has time to equalise. I did wonder whether the process of catching them by fish shop staff and spinning the bag around to seal it may have had an adverse effect. None of the other fish are aggresive types and they ignored the sick guppies anyway. Not even any fin nipping! The one left seems fine, perhaps I'll get him at mate.

Andrea, its just the way it is at the moment, i spoke to my local fish store today about, the guppies coming over at the moment (especially fancy males) are just not up to scratch, the breeding they do to get the fancy colours is weakening the fish according the this guy in the fish store (and he;s been running this shop for over 20 years), he is even selling his fancy male guppies now for £1.10 each or 6 for £5

i am delighted, just been in touch from someone at e-bay and am gonna pay £2.50 per adult guppy that has been born in this country, its not gaurentee, but better i odds i reckon that the Singapore Slum,

i really dont get paying £2 to £2.50 for a guppy that has been bred in Singapore for its colours then flown 1000s of miles here!!!
You might get lucky, but when i think about the amount of them i have bought and how many i still got, it baffles me, more discus would have survived in my tanks than these guppies!!!!

Singapore rot?? Is this a bacterial infection sich as Pseudomonas or Aeromonas. Am I behind the times here?

I am aware of guppy disease - Tetrahymena pyriformis, this is something that all fish keepers should dread. It will cause devastation to young fry and adults and not just guppies!

Local retailers should know better. Local bred fish dont get the respect that they deserve.

Not only are local bred fish more hardy to our water conditions but you can gaurantee that fish reared in tap water are more likely to be disease free than "manky" fish from the far east.

I agree the lfs won't buy platies off me. They say if I want rid them they'll take them for free There charging about £1.50 per platy which aren't as nice looking as mine and certainly aren't as healthy as mine.

I dont think that the fishkeepers are shouting loud enough about their prime local bred fish.

Thing is as long as people are buying the imported cr@p the lfs wont take home bred fish.

I agree 100%

What about starting an awareness campaign.

WEBMASTER can you create a local bred fish only category in the classfieds section.

Breeding most tropical fish does not require a licence, different story for goldfish and carp etc as they can carry notifiable diseases.

Hi Nina, i have had much better luck with shop bought mollies and platies. I am now not currently buying guppies from shops, there doesnt seem to be much point!! Whereabouts are you?

Never seem to have much problems with platies or swords. However that depends on where they come from. Most times when I see livebearers for sale I check for general condition before buying and if any doubt I walk away.

Mollies tend to be a mixed bag. There is tendency for breeders to use salt for mollies, yes it can condition the fish but its high time that mollies were reared in complete freshwater
