I was told that you need atlast 70-75 ltr per fish, I have 2 in a 180ltr tank, I am sure there will be people with more experience than me, will also let you know. |

Thanks for your replys, I was told today by my lfs that I could have 8-10 in this size tank, on the way home I was thinking....ummm that sounds alot, what would it be like in there when they pair off for breeding would I have alot of water on the floor and fish with bits missing !! |

I would keep no more than 2 in a 4x2x2 when adult at over a foot long in a 560 litre tank you may be able to keep three but the risk is 2 will pair up and rip the other to shreds I would suggest you buy 6 juveniles and grow them on and if a pair form up rehome the others. |

As far as filtration goes it will need to be over rated for these heavy polluters go for big externals such as the eheim 2250 or 2260 and supplement this with the addition of a fluidised sand bed filter.
The surface area of the filter is the most important thing here I expect many will recommend the fluval fx5 personally I would go for the eheim 2250 as it has a media capacity of 10 litres where as the fx5 only has 5.9 litres having said that the the flow rate of the fx5 is probably higher but as I understand it there is very little in the way of flexibility with the media you use as you are stuck using filter sponges and with big polluters such as oscars you will be cleaning these on a weekly basis.
As far as the fluidised bed goes there is no maintenance you just need to check it is operating correctly daily and every so often replace the media. |

Alan - interesting comment about sand filter media replacement. I understood this was self cleaning, that is of course assuming it is first pre-filtered via an external filter |

Thanks for your reply Alan. The tank i`m going to be using is Rena size 6`7"L X 24"H X 19"W I`ll be running the new Eheim Professionel 3 the 2080 on it, i`ve also got a 25watt uv i`ll use.
I`ve never used a fluidised bed filter before, is there a make or size you could recommend ? Regards, Paul |

lgv - Rainbow Fluidised Filters are the best. I use the Rainbow Lifeguard 300 which is ample for your tank.
They often come up on ebay (where I got my two from)
Infact theres one on there now but this is the 900 model. If its not physically too big for your tank you might want to have a go as you can never have too much filtration.

Thanks for that wymcot i`ll have a look. The only problem with the Eheim 3 is it`s big so there isn`t much room to stand anything next to it, I can only just get a row of gang plugs at the side of it, so if i`ve got to stand this sand filter next to it i`m going to have a bit of a problem ! |

The best place for a fluidised bed is hanging on the back of the tank.
The reason for changing the media is down to the fact after some time the media becomes very fine and the amount in the fluidised bed will reduce with time due to the constant erosion. |
