hi guys, bought a squamosa clam its about 31/2 inchs long and had it about week and a half, it is about 15 inches below the hallides, we run 3 150watt bulbs. The clam doesn't seems to open any more than a about 1cm and the mantles are not out fully. Could it be getting to much light or not enough.just worried that its not getting any food if its not opening up. Can anyone help, give some suggestions.

How long did you spend acclimatising it?

What lighting was it under in the shop?

What is your water quality like especially calcium and alkalinity as well as ph?

I have read a lot about these and come to the conclusion they are not that easy to keep and require prestine water conditions. Also have any tank inhabitants shown an unhealthy interest?

Hi Alan, it was acclimatised for over an hour, the shop had hallides too, not sure about wattage though. The calcium is 450+ ppm, PH is 8.2, not sure about alkalinity will check it. All other paramiters are what they should be. We have a half black angel that pecks at it now and again, do you think it could be because of him, he is abit of a pain with polyps he likes to eat them.

It probably is the angel some are real s*ds for harassing clams. If the angel isn't getting anywhere though it will hopefully give up but who knows.

What kelvin rating are the bulbs you use and what kelvin in the shop I suspect this may be more of an issue than the actual wattage of the bulbs for example if your on 10,000k and the shop is on 50,000k the clam would have adjusted to far more light at the blue end of the spectrum. Having said that it should adjust over time.

My main concern would be the angel do you find the clam closes slightly every time the angel goes near it?

All your other parameters sound spot on.

yep the clam shuts up tight when it pecks at it or swims close.

Have researched about it and some say to try relocating the clam till it finds a spot that it likes. So maybe just leaving it and letting it adjust would help. My main concern is that it is feeding properly, do you think it will still feed, we are putting in marine snow and i know that people recommend you use that with them.

The angel is a little sod he tries his luck with most things

Not sure about the kelvin rating of the bulbs, have to ask my boyfriend, he the technical one. Thanks for your help Alan

If the clam is shutting up whenever the angel is going near its definately the angel that is the problem I expect every time the clam starts to open the angel spots it and homes in.

If the angel doesn't stop harassing it within a couple of days one will have to go otherwise the clam is very likely to die.

I wouldn't be excessively concerned about the lack of feeding yet as the claim will mainly rely on its symbiotic algae for food.

You could try isolating the angel if you have a quarantine tank or a floating tank after about a day you should be able to be farily certain whether or not the angel is the problem as I expect the clam will open up.

I have also heard of clams being annoyed by shrimps so watch for this cleaner shrimps will harass it if they are during the day whilst the shy shrimp species such as dancing shrimp will come out at night.
