i went over the lake yesterday with one of my 3 girls (daughters not birds)to feed the ducks ,when we got over thier i noticed that one of the swans had something hanging out of its mouth it was a hook and line (about 30 meters ) i noticed a couple of fishermen on the otherside one of them was walking over ,so i got apiece of bread and handed it to the swan luring it closer when it got close enough i grabbed the line ,well that when all hell broke loose first it tryed to attack me the it swam away but i had hold of it when it came to the end of the line and it was tight i noticed the hook was through it tounge ,but i held on anyway by this time the fisherman came over with a pair of forceps ,luckily the swan managed to tangle himself up and i pulled him in the i grabbed hims head and the bloke took the hook out , then we let it go , but it decided to have another go at us so i hid behind my 2.5 year old daughter lol , but i the end it flew back onto the lake looking a bit pi**ed off ,and took it out on the geese ....but i went home feeling that i had done my part for nature ,,(well i suppose having 3 kids is) |

Well,i think u must be a really nice guy to do that, but the swan, nasty as they can be,would probably be as ungrateful for u saving his/her life, but u never know...One day you could be ice skating on this very same pond with your daughters a few years later, when all of a sudden you break ice right in the middle, and your daughters and anyone else who could save you are too far away to do anything without risking their lives, and as you go under the freezing cold water and bob back up again for air, desperate in your attempts to get out before you succumb to cramp and hypethermia,lo and behold the ungrateful swan you saved, suddenly recognises his/her saviour from a few years back, this time he/she is swanning about with the cygnets, and comes to your rescue.....(i think Hollywood's ringing me on the phone right now, gotta go...money to be made!) |

Been an angler myself I'd be pretty annoyed with someone leaving it with a hook and s..t loads of line, the hook would eventually come out, its illegal to use anything but barbless hooks however, that amount of line would have eventually killed it. The only way this could have happened is if the swan was deliberatly baited, waters cold fish would be low in the water so the only way the swan would have got hooked would have been to go deep. Unless the water was only 2ft deep and devoid of fish.
On the lighter side I remember sitting quietly next to a lake in Cheshire many years ago when bang I was hit in the back and knocked into the water by a swan that had taken exception to me sitting there, never even saw it coming. |

Wayne - well done but the swans reaction was understandable given that he was being dragged about by his tongue
There is a misconception that swans are dangerous but they only tend to attack during the breeding season (naturally).
Handling a swan is easy, but first its got to be caught. The best way is to first grab its neck (it will not peck you) and at the same time pull it towards you wrapping your spare arem around its body in order to contain its wings.
This is done more to protect the swans wings rather than the person catching it.
The bones is a swan (as in all birds) are hollow and can break easily if your not careful. Its wings are not strong enough to you any lasting harm.
If anyone ever see's something like this, either call the RSPCA (useless bunch) or try the above approach.
Once the swan is constrained it will sit in you arms like a baby, but dont forget to support its neck
Once again Wayne, well done !!!
Best you keep away from him though as they have long memories and his tounge will be sore for months |
