Heya, i have a marine tank, recently introduced 2 new regal tangs a few days ago, one of which didnt do too well the other seemed to be doing ok although does stay at the bottom of the tank.

It does swim up and down every now and again but recently its started going to the bottom and breating deeply, the other passed away due to white spot, this one does not seem to have it, should i let it be and wait (i have a UV steriliser) or should i give it a fresh water bath and risk stressing it more?

I do not have a quarintine tank set up, and i have corals in the tank so cant really use any treatments, i have started feeding them a little bit of garlic.

help much appreciated

Hi Are or salt levels ok or have they spiked or droped and so the fish might have be afected by the change in salt levels. Hope it this helps but it might not.

If you dont have inverts then I find Waterlifes Product called Cuprazin to do the job. Beware it contains copper and will remain active in your tank for up to 6months.

If it is a parasitic infection esha oodinex is a whitespot treatment supposedly safe with inverts I believe waterlifes treatment called Octozin is also safe with inverts. But double check there are treatments available that deal with whitespot in reef tanks. Have you tried carrying out a water change to see if there is any improvement do you use RO water do you have a lot of algae growth this would cause a ph crash over night if the water is not adequately buffered. There are lots of things it could be how long did you take introducing the fish into the tank 10 15 20 mins or did you pop them straight in, its possible the initial stress factor that left them open to infection was osmotic shock.

John its difficult to help without knowing what is available in South Africa try searching for esha products or waterlife products if you can find either they sell effective treatments for both reef tanks and fish only set ups but you must be careful to use the right one. As a preventative of whitespot you should keep the ph high and stable this tends to keep the fish thriving and they are less susceptable to infestation. Sorry I couldn't be of more help don't bother with freshwater baths they don't work as the parasite burrows into the skin and is protected from the salinity shift.

thanks alan
i went out and bought some herbal medication from the pet shop it called heel all and they said i must use it for seven days but that did not work i also turn out the lights and only turn them on for about an hour a day just to fed. they say that it should work and they also said to turn the temp up to 30 degrees is this ture my temp is running a 25 degress now but i am also concrened about my coral. i have a finger leather and a pin cushion and a rose coral. thank john

All you do when you push the temp up is speed up the life cycle which does help during treatment but is probably going to do more harm than good to the corals so I would be inclined to leave the temp as it is.

I have found that a high ph 8.3 or 8.4 seems to boost the fishes defences I don't know why but it will help if you can raise the ph slightly. Also do you have a lot of algae grawth it may be at night you are getting a ph drop which is stressing the fish leaving them open to this parasite.

The lighting trick is an odd one I have heard though that part of the parasites life cycle is dependant on light so this may actually work but again I would be concerned about the corals as you may inadvertently bleach them by doing this as the algae in them will not like this one bit.

Is this the only shop in your area? What product manufacturers do you have there there may be a few that south africa have in common with the UK. Ones to particularly look out for are Waterlife and esha. Kent marine make a treatment but I am not sure how safe this is with inverts it is a herbal mix of peppers and chilli's I think it is awful if you get it in your eyes its just like pepper spray I think it is called RXP not sure for certain though.

Here are a few weblinks they may be able to help if you contact direct but who knows:

http://www.eshalabs.com/index.htm

I have found a distributer of waterlife products in south africa here is the link

http://www.waterlife.co.uk/waterlife/distrbute-world4.htm#SAfrica

The treatment you want is Myxazin it treats bacterial infections in freshwater and marine I believe but it is also a marine whitespot treatment that is safe with inverts if you have trouble with the link for waterlife let me know and I will type all the address details in for the SA distributor. Best of luck.

hi alan how are you?
my common clown is clear of white spot now but the yellow tang has a couple of spots but it seems to getting better. thank for all the input. i dont know if the heel all did the job or if it was turning the lights out or the temp that did it. i also did a water change. i used reef crystals and ro water. but before i was using sea water maybe that was the problem. thanks john

Questions I can't answer I'm afraid John your tank is looking stunning post a new thread specifically on the topics of these corals you are having problems with. You can mix tangs but it is not easy and you will get some fighting for a while I used to keep a yellow and a powder blue together they beat the hell out of each other at first but it passed after a week or so and they both recovered none the worse for ware.
