hello everyone, i'm after some expert advice. i have a 120 l tank with 3 fancy goldfish,2 hong kong plecs,6 zebra danio and 8 white cloud minnows. the gold fish were established (many years old) we bought 4 danio and all was well, we got the minnows +2 more danio and slowly noticed shredded fins, missing scales, veins in tails and bubbly opaque ulcers? again on the tails of only the goldfish. then one of the minnows started nipping the largest goldy and another jumped out of the tank. one of the minnows has almost turned white and is very small and one has dissappeared completely?! it has been about 3 weeks now with these symptoms in which time they have been treated with stress zyme, general tonic, anti fungus and fin rot and more tonic with water changes in between, tested ammonia used ammo lock and all water parameters seem fine, the goldfish are rubbing flicking and flashing like mad and its quite distressing, white growths in tails are multiplying, please any suggestions as you can tell i'm a bit lost, thaks all. |

sounds like septicemia(sp?) try an anti internal bacteria medcine, also lots of water changes. |

my guess is that the new fish may be also nipping the fins and stressing the fancy goldfish.
we wouldn't normally mix fancies with tropicals. |

i agree with kell + yanton the smaller fish will be nipping the fins of ya fancies! this in turn leaves the fish open to in fections etc!the meds youve used! did ya use em all together at same time ?if so STOP NEVER USE MORE THAN 1 MED AT ANY 1 TIME ya say ya fish are rubbing +flashing a lot maybe flukes or whitespot if i were you id do a 50% water change asap over airate the water for a couple days + add a general antibiotic leave for a week to 10 days see what happens |

How did this all begin?
Has there been flicking with the fish and rapid breathing?
Assuming the water quality is fine it sounds as though there may be a parasitic problem possible gill and skin flukes assuming water quality is spot on it is likely these parasites may have been the initial trigger.
A formalin malachite green combo remedy should deal with the possible parasites.
However as you do not know what you are dealing with as an initial trigger I would treat with an esha remedy combo that being esha 2000 and esha exit used together they will treat just about every fish ailment going.
In the first instant though I would suggest you make sure the water quality is spot on and the tank is not over stocked.
I am concerned that youi are mixing danio's with non tropical fish long term this may produce problems at the very least the danios will not thrive at worst they may become stressed and could actually be the trigger for this disease outbreak you are suffering.
However immediately stop using the treatments you are using carry out a series of water changes to dilute the treatment that is still in the tank and place some carbon in the tank to remove any remaining meds although this shouldn't be necessary really the water changes should suffice most remedies are extremely unstable in an aquarium and degrade with in a day hence the reapplication of remedies.
Take a look at www.eshalabs.co.uk they are extremely concentrated therefore you must not over dose. |

Ive read somewhere that they are a cold water fish, but would do well in both, the zebra danios that is. |

thanks all, i appreciate your views, i can't see any visible parasites so i think i will check out the web sites you suggested for some kind of antibiotic as i'm pretty sure it's an internal problem. i will keep you posted as this may not be over yet?! |

skin and gill flukes are only visible under a microscope but you get all the flicking and rapid breathing normally associated with velvet and whitespot sometimes fish will produce masses of mucus it is often this mucus that will cause the breathing problems.
Incidentally all fish carry these flukes it is normally only when the fish become stressed in some way that the numbers proliferate having said that I had this problem with no stress factors coming into play. |

is there a med that treats both bacterial and parasitic infections at the same time? i suspect both. |

I went to by some meds today and they had the protozin and sterazin, didn't know if it would take a while to get the esha products as my local place doesn't stock them. and for once i found someone at this place who knew what they were talking about, described prob and he said the sterazin should be enough so i'm about to do partial water change and start treatment. poor little guys are looking really sad now, fingers crossed!! thanks for all your help, i'm still a novice so i appreciate your knowledge!x |

If the sterazin is not totally effective i.e. symptoms return get hold of the esha remedies.
I have used waterlife remedies with mixed results I believe due to the succes of water life and their remedies being used globally I think many pathogens are becoming resistant to them esha remedies are not that commonly used hence in my experience are still very effective.
The other advanteage with the 2 esha remedies I have mentioned is they can be used together and therefore will treat virtually everything. Plus they are cheap really cheap. |
