Hi. I was recently in the USA on holiday and visited a park which had some very unusual pond fish in it. Some were vivid blue, others stripey, yellow etc.
Do you know if fish other than goldfish, orfe, tench, sterlets koi etc are available anywhere in the UK.
I would love some of these unusual fish in my pond.
Thanks
Paul
The trouble with most coldwater fish is that in the uk they could survive in our native waters. Back when they were no laws about this non-native fish, plants, crayfish, etc. were released in to our waterways which ended in many species coming to near extinction. Now there are plenty of laws for these. You can get hold of a few species but you will need licenses and certificates. Also nearly all fish dealers do not bother importing these and so few people would want all the hassle to keep them. If you ask your local dealer they could probably get them or point you in the right direction. A lot of infomation about this is on the Defra website, take a look.
the fish you saw were most probably frontosas &/or malawi fish, as a lot of americans have them in their outdoor fish ponds as they have an ideal year round climate!unfortunately we dont & these fish would never survive our winters.
