My new 6x2x2 is being delivered in about 3 weeks. Do you think it would be worthwile using the water from my current 3x2x2 and then RO or just using all new salted RO ?
I am going to transfer 30kgs of live rock and will get another 40kgs when I'm ready.

Thanks

Try and keep 50% of the old water with the other 50% obviously being new salt mix.

I think you can get away with keeping 25% if containers are in short demand but i'm not completely sure.

i agree, move as much as you can from the old tank into the new one!

drummerduck says 0% of the old water.. but the new tank is twice the size? so does that mean use all the old weater and top up with new, or use 50%of the old water?

Use 50% of the old water...... if you went about a normal water change you would lose 25-30% anyway.

Its o.k saying keep all the water but you will need the means to contain it all..... i never said use 0% of the old water!!! lol

Use all the old water tranfering all the live rock over with the old water and then gradually add new water mixed to match the old waters sg. filling the tank over a few days or as quickly as you can dependent on how many containers you have to mix the water in.

However if you are to continue with the same salt mix and the same sg and the like you could half fill the new tank with RO and mix the salt water in the tank before transfering anything this gets around the container problem and then start to transfer the old water across in to the new tank as you will be using the same salt mixed to the same sg and temp as well there should be no risk of osmotic shock and you should be able to move live rock over as you go.

Right sorry i have read that again without realising you are going to a bigger tank.....

Buy some water/food safe containers to hold as much as you can in this case... maybe someone on the forum who lives close to you may be able to lend you some Like i got the offer of.

Fill the rest up with new slat mix and let the filters run like Anna said.

Thanks for the replies.

I'm not sure I want to use all of the old water - do you think I should move the water, rock and fish at the same time ?

What about the sand - old or new ?

Sand will be live in the current tank so mix it with any new you might want to add.
