hey guys, sorry i havnt been on for a while. im just wondering what your thoughts are on tankmates, in my 4'x2'x2' tank. ive currently got: 2x pseudotropheus acei, 2x metraiaclima esterae "red zebra", 1x haplochromis livingstoni, 1x haplochromis vensustus "giraffe cichlid", 3x pseudotropheus zebra, 3x melanchromis auratus "malawi golden cichlid", 3x yellow lab "lions cove", 1x whiptail catfish, 1x spiny eel
and 1x unknown wildcaught tropheus sp.
im wondering if i can add any other non malawi fish, im thinking about convicts (you'l be pleased lex!!) or maybe some other tankmates, i want your sugestions please guys. |

hi nige i personaaly wouldnt mix lake ciclids and other cichlids! y not get some auloncaras if u want something different or some p. trewavasse, labido. fuelleborni? there are also nyasse synodontis that would be fine to go in!as well as other african synos! u can also get like malawi crabs aswell! |

i had one of those, but he didnt last long, the spiny eel (at least thats what i think he is) isnt even a cichlid, i had a few problems to start off with but everythings going ok, i had thought about synodontis nyasae but theyre *** expensive round here, i know in one of the display tanks at my lfs they have a pair of cons in with malawis which was where i got the idea from thanks for the fat reply

nige, there are plenty of tanganyikan cichlids you can keep with them.
i have always kept mixed malawis / tangys aquariums with no problems at all.
try some frontosas and leleupi. |

i thought that frontosa got a bit big for my little tank but i may try the, are they ok on there own or pairs, or will i need a group? |

nige - anna's advise is sound, do not mix them with non Malawi's, there is a vast array of different species from the lake to choose from. Her advise about the cranb however is "iffy" as they can be prone to attacking smaller fish whilst they are resting during the night
I assume most of your fish are small because when they get larger you will not get away with these fish in a 4ft tank. I have a Venutus & a Livingstoni that are both in excess of 8", by the way, they are Nimbochromis not Haplochromis which refferes to the group as opposed to the species
The only other problem that you WILL get, is the Auratus, if you have more than two males, one will ultimately be killed, and if you have one, he will wreak havoc with your other fish. Three females will be OK but even they will attack and kill one another.
My advise, get rid of them when they get bigger, although they are very colourful fish.
Also your Metriclima Estherae and your pseudotropheus zebra are one of the same thing, ie the same fish.
If your real;y interested in keeping Malawi's visit this site which is dedicated to them. Its UK based and full of great people and sound advise

thanks a lot, i thought that they were different due to the red zebras being in the metriaclima genus while the normal ones are in the pseudotropheus genus, i sorta jumped in without knowing much but i am learning, the auratus are two females one male, however so far the male (im fairly sure as hes the only black one) is very docile well for the malawis anyway, theyre about 3 1/2". the venutus is about 6" with the livingstoni being about 5 1/2" i will check out the site you mentioned thanks alot guys.
p.s i have tried the malawi crab, but he only lasted abouy 2 weeks, they had him,
once again thanks

good luck Nige, get some convicts in there, every tanks should have some!!! I used to keep Red Zebra, nasty, evil things!!! I think Tangs are best, |
03-05-2006 07:36 by Penny1
|
Yep Nige i have to agree with Lex Red Zebras are Evil, nasty, nasty, nasty and plain evil. I have 2 had to take the male out the tank he was killing all me other fish |

the red zebras are both female (this is going on the fact that theyre both orange and there's no egg spots) thanks a lot guys, i think the unknown tropheus is from lake tanganyika. next time i go to leicter ill pick up a few gud'uns |
03-05-2006 09:23 by Ray
|
Nige, ignore egg spots as a means of sexing, lots of females have them.red zebras are not evil(auratus are) they are Malawi,if you put convicts in there they will be torn to pieces.Tropheus are intolerant of conspecifics so you will need a large group,or just the one. |

|
Get rid of the lot bar the tropheus and just have a massive group of tropheous then chcuk in some lake tang synos and a couple of tang eels. |

I would stick with malawis - but you want to make the numbers up to 30 or so cichlids (mainly mbuna would be best) |

thats what i was originaly aiming for, th only reason i mentioned the convicts is because ive got 2 4" females in a 2' tank and i think the tanks a bit small for them, i dont think convicts are reef-safe so cant go in there and the 4' comunity has a lot of bite size fish in it so that was the only option ill maybe se if i can find a larger tank for them i still disagree with everyone on the auratus. it was my male acei that was causing all the problems
cheers guys and/or girls

lol nige Acei are pussy cats, wait till the Auratus mature |
03-05-2006 13:52 by nige
|
ill se what happens, i think they are already mature as one of the females is holding |
03-05-2006 22:06 by wymcot
|
" i think they are already mature as one of the females is holding"
Females can hold at 2", mature males can get to 5" with females slightly smallern.
At that size, nothing is safe.
If your happy to run the risk of losing other fish, enjoy finding out about thier true identities |

where abouts in leicester r u nige?? |
04-05-2006 00:38 by wymcot

Tony, yes its me, Zebras are babies in comparison to Auratus.
There's no getting away from it, when small they are lovely fish.
Like all Malawi's, the bigger the tank less aggression. |
