if it is it needs bright illumination give it a few days to settle down and the whole thing will come out in the pipes they come out of are they a deep red colour? |

its an organ pipe coral. yubipora family The distinctive deep red skeleton of this coral is made of calcium carbonate (limestone) and consists of a series of parallel tubes connected by horizontal sheets. The skeleton retains this deep red colouration permanently. The polyps of organ-pipe coral have eight feathery tentacles, and are a green-brown to grey colour. Polyps are usually extended during the day, but will retract if disturbed.

|
basically little tubeworms on rock.where did you buy it and what did they call it? |
09-05-2006 10:10 by trik
|
the rock should be covered in a mat of very fine hair this is the living coral head in side u will see small tubes at the surface where the christmas tree worm lives. if it is this it requires organic material and photo plankton which must be supplied on a regular basis . |

wat else do u have in the tank. be carfull about some star fish they tend to lke corals and sponges . not all star fish but some . |
09-05-2006 10:41 by lisareynar
|
we have 2 angel fish , 3 domino fish , 2clown fish, a pink little fish (dont know what it is) fan worm , green starfish and 2 shrimps, i want another larger fish about 4-5 inches do you know what would be best to go with them |
09-05-2006 10:47 by trik
|
u need to decide if your going to keep a reef tank or fish marine tank or mixed . not all fish are compatible for reef like your angels are notorious at nipping polyps corals mushrooms and even some anemones . i have a few tangs they are ok as long as they are feed regulary and they are very good at keeping alga under control. |

if its a green brittle star your in touble if u want to do reef . in my bible (trusted hand book) IT SAYS IT ONE OF THE MOST VORACIOUS INVERTS FOUND IN CAPTIVITY NOT SUITIBLE FOR REEF . IT WILL EAT ANY THING IT CAN GET HOLD OF. damsels, manderines, blennies, gobies, cleaner shrimps crabs any thing . |

Looks more like a serpeant star to me I have one it can touch the back and front of my tank at the same time. 18" across.
If fed once a week with a piece of cockle or lance fish they won't actively hunt they are a fantastic detritovore equally they are in my mind very useful for eating anything that dies out of reach.
They are unlikely to succesfully catch healthy fish but if hungry they will try as I have seen mine hunting it held itself up off of the substrate and when a fish swam under it it just collapsed on top of it fish was free with a prod this is when I started feeding the thing periodically haven't ha a problems since. |
