scotty i think only something called a reverse osmosis filter(ro) will remove all nitrates.....
i may be wrong ...
its not clear what membrane is in this filter
sory im no more help as i havent used one .....i am looking at investing in a ro for this reason

anyone drink ro water in their home? i see you can get them on e-bay that have a storage tank ....would be good to have to drink as our water is not nice tasting and would be great to use stored water for tank water changes ........i dont want a set up where water is always going to wast.....
any info would be helpfull thanks ! rob

robert.pope check out
www.ro-man.com
I felt safer buying from here then ebay and cheaper then LFS. Horses for courses but its worth a look. Alan pointed me in the direction of this site and i bought a 100gph 6 stage unit with DI filter, pressure meter, tdi meter for £145.

That might be over kill for some but they have a wide range.

PS. I dont work for Ro-Man WM!!

Your right in the sence of getting an Ro unit and then completing normal water changes. The actual Ro unit doesn't remove the nitrates.... the water WITHOUT nitrates being replaced brings down the levels.

you can drink RO water as long as you do not have a DI filter on the unit.

Ro units are a valuble piece of kit in marine keeping, they do on the otherhand waste a lot of water.
