my female has a bit poking out between her lower fin and her tail, is this a egg laying tube ? it's similar to what happens before my parrots (fish) lay eggs but i'm new to convict and they're only about 2" big (the fish, not the pokey out thing) ! The female has gone a real bright turquoise underneath recently, d'you think i might get some babbas ?
would they lay eggs on something like a pot or in it ?
Hi Zoe. Yup sounds like a breeding tube (ovipositor) The females tube is less pointed and wider than the males. They can breed as small as an inch or so, soit is likely she will bree. female usually has colouration on the beely, so I think she is in condition. Feed some frozen food and do a couple of 25 percent water changes in one week and they should breed. Convicts are cave spawners, but ae flexible, a flowerpot (clay) is ideal - it does not need to be big. Place it near a corner of the tank to give them security and to stop them taking over the whole tank.
Thanks, have just looked again and have a flower pot coverd in eggs ! they are only two in tank , they killed the other smaller ones, so should be ok, fingers crossed. I'm so excited.
