yes youll need to keep the majority of the water,as a fresh water mix is going to kill all the beneficial bacteria in your filters, and you will lose all your livestock.what size is the tank?

I would lose the amount the you normally take out for a water change... normally 25%. This helps a small amount. Poly boxes and bags from LFS.... and make sure you have the whole day it can be a long process.....

get some big buckets with lids/save at least half of ya tank water/put ya fish + bits in this water to transport

personally id only keep a minimal amount of the water. you wont loose all of the bacteria just a portion of it. your real issue here will be that you are about to remove your filter from airaited water any longer than 20 mins will become a problem. if it was mine id go buy a brand new dustbin and half fill it with tank water and fish. clean my filters media out in whats left in the tank and then put all media in to the bin with the fish. then put the rest of the filter in a bag and go. then simply poor it all in to the tank on arrival set up filter and put media in filter. jobs a good un. id be happy to do this with only 10% of the tanks original water if it were mine

lol!!! im sorry!

seriously though a dust bin costs next to nothing at a hardware store and you have the added extra of having a nice new bin for your nice new house! cant loose!

i will get a bin and pump the water to it through the window down a hose in t the van so no need to lift the water so will be simple enough also will just make sure the internal filter is submurged as well as the crushed coral and sand

it is important that the media gets airated water. id be more inclined not to leave it in the filter without passing water through it. the water will be agitated enough to stay airated via the vans vibrations and movment

I agree with dannyboy..... keep ur filter media live. It worked for me when I moved and set up a new tank
