Could you please advise me if i need a sand bed in my newly set up reef tank, all it seems to do is attract the waste ?

I use crushed coral as a bed it seems to be fine for me, however what ever you use I would suggest a cleaner crew and include a sand shifting star fish it keeps the bed turned over nicley.

No you do not need a sand bed if you dont want to. Do remember that some animals will be better with a sand bed as they naturally dig.

You could go with a small layer of live sand and some inverts and fish that dig itup - it should not collect too much detritus then.

Sand beds are more popular now, but still not the only option.

Will it make any difference to the PH either way ?

Can you describe the sand bed are you trying to get a deep sand bed (DSB) going. This takes time and careful observation as well as careful seeding of the DSB.

If you are just talking a 1 inch depth in the bottom of your tank the best thing to do is add a sand sifting starfish or 2 this is not what I would recommend if you were setting up a DSB in the main tank though if I was to set up a DSB in the main tank I would add the following:

Nassarus snails
Cerith snails
Get as much substrate from established tanks as you can as well, as you will need thousands of worms. stm will sell grunge from the bottom of the live rock curing vats as well as sand from their DSB's it is well worth looking into this sort of material. Live rock is also a vital component for introducing worms. It must be good quality live rock and fully cured again stm are good for this and no I'm not on pay role they just supply some of the best stuff in the country.

Give an overview of your set up and we can advise on possible problem areas also include all live stock and quantity of live rock.

Incidentally you can't risk hermits with a DSB in the main tank as they will predate on nassarus and cerith snails.
