hello. can anyone pls advice on severum, especially golden severum. I would like to make a set up for this fish but with mian intent to breed so i will be happy to kkep just one species in a tank.

How big do you think tank should be and how set up to breed?

Also in my area my pH is 7.6 and i think the water hard? can still breed in this?

Please any advice please, i wish to keep and breed these fish.

hey m8. the golden severum will live in your water as ours is the same. as far as setup goes you will be looking at a 4'x18x18 as these will grow to 8". for breeding pourposes you will need about 6 fish if you buy juviniles you will then stand a good chance of getting a pair. you will need to have a big filter because these are big messy fish. for softer acidic water i have always used rainwater collected from my water butt. if you can afford it a reverse osmosis unit is a good invest ment. im sure there are others on the forum that will be able to give you better information on these

also these are cave spawners and dont mature until they get to be 4 1/2" so provide a big flowerpot. to sex them the females usually dont have markings, are a duller colour and wider than the males when viewed from the top. the males are easily identifiable by the "scribbles" on the cheeks (or gill covers if thats what you prefer to call it)

thank you, so you think for breeding i really do need softer water? thanks for you advise abdul

ok abdul, severum are from south america so if you want to provide them with their natural conditions you are looking at soft acidic water. They are easily sexed in that males will have a scribble like set of markings over their face and gill covers, females have clear faces. They will spawn on any smooth, flat surface. They aren't particularly territorial unless they are breeding when they will chase any and all intruders. These are character fish, like oscars and you will enjoy keeping them.Hope this helps. PS nige, just how big was the cave your severum spawned in?

it was a flowerpot, about 5" across with another one epoxied to the bottom and the bottoms knocked through

Cool, never heard of or seen it.Perhaps that's what my red necks are looking for but i'll have to get bl%%dy huge pots to get a 5inch hole at the bottom for them to squeeze thru.Did they keep the spawn inside the pot or move them to a pit?

thank you. i also research on internet and to breed severum i think pH 7.6 and hard water will be not worth it. I prefer to create the natural environment as close as is possible. Am looking for my next cichlid breeding project, would prefer american, will research more i think. Possibly Firemouths but not sure at this stage.

With that water you're certainly looking at central american cichlids. Most beautiful by a long stretch are hypsophrys nicaraguense.Good luck and let us know what you choose.

you can always go with african cichlids, these have some of the best colours. the golden severum have been selectively bred to produce the colour.

heros hero, they were 5" at the normal opening and these were the bits epoxied together and the bottoms knocked through, it was buried about an inch in the sant tho

oscars are a good challenge. its also worth noting that its best not to buy all the fish at the same place. far better to buy unrelated fish as long as its possible.

Abdul,
I don't know ho much experience you have with C/A Cichlids but if i was looking at breeding i would be inclined to try the rarer fish as the market is pretty much flooded with Severum,Firemouth,Convict,etc...
Have a look at this site for some ideas
WWW.CICHLIDSOUTHEAST.CO.UK,these guys are a great bunch of lads who will be happy to help with all you need to know about your chosen project

darren, understand what you are saying but wouldn't it make sense to start a newb cichlid keeper on the easier fish to keep and breed? You didn't learn to drive in a ferrari after all!!!

Sorry,
Abdul did'nt rally make it clear what his knowledge was,in that case i would reccomend Convicts, easy to breed and really interesting to watch and study
If you decide to go with Convicts though try and get wild or f1 if you can as these will give you more colour and less chance of creating mutant offspring

thank you. the website you mentioned looks very good Darren. In terms of experience with breeding cichlids, only malawi, but i no longer have that aquarium. I would like non-mouthbrooders who can breed in hard water.

I dont want necessarily the easiest, but small challenge. Severum i am not going for due to water requirements. However there seem to be many American cichlids who can live happily and breed in pH from 7.5-8.0

When i have a clearer idea I will post again for some more advice.

Anybody have any experience or views on breeding T-Bar (Sajica).

Thanks. Abdul

Got a breeding pair in my cichlid community tank. Very much like convicts in their parental aggression.Lots of information out there.

heros, i think Sajica could be a good project. Can you explain a little more about your experience with them and breeding them (if you do)? I have researched on internet but want that supplemented through advice on here. And anyone else on Sajica advice. Thank You, Abdul

heros, how do the Sajica get on with your other fish and do they still breed in your community tank? I am thinking about getting a group of 6, but on their own. Thanks, Abdul

I only bought two and it took a while for them to pair off. The female then dug out the gravel from under some bogwood to make a cave and they spawned in there. They became very territorial and quite easily saw off much bigger fish.I didn't see the eggs and the first i new that they'd been successful was when free swimming fry appeared about a week or so after they first became territorial.I had nowhere to move them to so they had to fend for themselves and they lasted about a week.I was feeding them 3 times a day by squirting defrosted baby brine shrimp from a pipette into the fry swarm. There coloring gets quite dramatic when they breed in that they go almost completely black and their eyes get really bright.Outside of breeding they are ideal cichlid community fish

Hello everyone! Your worst nightmare... Another "newbie" needing to know "everything." LOL. I am a koi ponder who just accidently became the parent to a golden severum. I just LOVE it! So elegant and beautiful. I was looking for info on it, and ran across this forum. My little girl (plain face) is about 3". Lovely color. I have her in a 30 gallon tank right now, but am setting up a 55. When I eventually move her, I would like to add some tank mates. I realize this takes caution. Suggestions?
