What equipment to i need to run a successful reef tank. I have a sump with MH'S on the way. Mud sum with Calperia in, Live rock?
Do i need Calcium Reactors etc.

1. A aqaurium .. the sump is another way of filtration

It depends on the level of calcium demand in the tank. The need for a skimmer is debatable in a caulerpa miracle mud set up personally I would go for a less efficient skimmer such as an air driven model as these will strip out far less of the beneficial organisms than a more powerful skimmer would.
I wouldn't bother with a hydrometer either I would go straight for a refractometer hydrometers are dodge at the best of times.
Live rock should equate to about 1 kilo for every 2 imp gallons go for the best cured rock you can find I go for www.stm-shop.co.uk once it is up and running you will need to establish whether or not a calcium reactor would be cheaper to run than using the balling method for calcium addition. Either way I recommend you run the tank fishless for at least 2 months and set up a quarantine tank for any new additions so they can be treated with copper to remove the risk of introducing parasites. |
