Posted What size light units for 6ft tank ?

Hi everyone.

My 6ft tank is arriving this week, will a 4ft halide unit be long enough or do you think i need to go for 5ft or even 2 x 3ft ?

The 4ft unit is 2 x 150w so gives me 300w + I have some t8 blues I can use.

Thanks

I was going to post the same question here Bradsdad as i have a 5x2x2ft Rio 400 tank and really have no idea what i need to go from T5's to Halide. Sorry to postanother question on your thread Bradsdad but does anyone know the difference between hlida and metal halide? or is there none?

metal halide has something to do with whats in the bulb ? dd have you got t5s at the moment what the combined wattage?
BRADSdad a 4ft unit will be fine , just try to keep you more light loving corals under and the rest can go where its a bit dimmer ,i use t8 blue actinic for night time coz you only want to use the halides for about 10 hours max

What corals are you going to keep?

If you want to keep stony's metal halides are a must.

The 4 foot lighting unit should be long enough basically you want the bulbs to be in the centre of each half to do that the bulb centres need to be 3 feet apart which is likely on a 4 foot long unit.

With a 2 foot deep tank going for metal halides would be the best bet as t5's do not give the light penetration required with a 2 foot deep tank having said that though I have succesfully kept softies in a 2 foot deep tank lit by 6 T8's.

Have you got the light unit yet or have you ordered it? If you haven't yet consider going for 250 watt instead of 150 watt plus a couple of T5 blue actinics. This will give you more options with tank stocking.

Do you know if the halides on ebay from Germany are ok?
They are from Bavaria or something like that, they seem too cheap to be true.

Can you keep fish with just T5's?

You can keep fish with no lights but I would recommend getting the lighting for a tank right from the start as you intend to keep corals eventually if I recall from previous posts.
