sick fish |

Hello there, I have a large tank with some fish in that I took from my =
Grandad's pond after he died. They have been fine but recently one fish =
has been either sitting on the bottom not moving or at the top with his =
mouth to the top of the water. His mouth is constantly opening and =
closing, but he's not really gasping, seems to swim ok when he does =
swim, not eating but not lost any weight. Been like this for about 5 =
days so I took him out and have put him in a seperate tank as I don't =
want the other fish to get ill. I can't see anything physically wrong =
with him except his tail looks a little bent. He's just an ordinary =
goldfish, brown , I think they call it the wild type as he just looks =
like a tiny carp.
I have a filter in the tank which is on constantly. A bubble machine and =
a light which I turn off at night. The water looks very clear. I only =
have one plant in the tank which my friend bought me, I think this is a =
plant for tropical fish, I was wondering whether there are any plants =
that are not safe for goldfish? The plant is a Echinodorus parviflorus. =
Sometimes the fish swim as if they're possessed quickly darting around =
for a few secs and shaking their heads, not sure if they are just having =
a frolic or whether it's a problem, only lasts a few seconds and then =
they are fine again.
Any help or advice you can offer would be greatly appreciated, many =
thanks

ok firstly a plant wont do anything to the fish.
the tank probably does not have a mature filter in it as this takes a couple of months to mature and in this period only a few fish should be added.
if you meen the tail if frail and seems ripped, its a case of finrot and can be treated if you go to a pet store and buy and anti-finrot.
you say the fish is shaking its head when it swims..this is usually a sign of an early developmet of a swimbladder disfunction but you say the fish is swimming fine so you may need to observe this a bit more.
with regards to putting the fish in another tank.....this is not needed as niether of these are contageus and the tank probably wont have another mature filter. do 20% water changes every 2 days and if its possible take a picture and show us. |

Ok thanks very much, the very end of the tail is fine, so I don't think it's fin rot, I'll take a photo in a sec. I'm a complete novice so have probably done everything wrong. I just wanted to save some of my grandads goldfish as the bungalow is to be sold soon. I was wondering if the fish had eggs? |

put him back into the tank....you may want to treat the whole tank with an anti bacterial remedy for caution because i carnt see anything wrong with the fish, unless it has a swim bladder prob

Many thanks for advice george, I haven't tested the water, do stores do this for you if you take in a water sample? Also if the fish does have eggs I could put it back into the pond that it came from for a short while so it could lay them? I had thought that was why it was spending a lot of time on the bottom of the tank behind a rock??
As i said he has nothing obviously wrong with him when you look at him, as in no spots etc, but he doesn't feed and hasn't done for quite a few days.
Sorry to ask so much but I would hate for him to die. |

the fin at the top was flat before i separated him though and also I have noticed that some of the other fish in the tank do seem to keep their top fin flat a lot of the time now? |

Ok Rob I'll do a water change, i did do one a couple of days ago, also could i ask is it safe to use some warm water to make it the same temperature as the tank water is now or should it just be cold water you use as I have read conflicting theories online. |

Goldfish are a very hardy fish, but to be on the safe side try and get the water within a couple of degrees of the tank water to avoid shock. |

any store should do a water test for you for a cheap price but its better to buy ur own as u need to do it every week |
