i posted the otherday about my jack dempseys laying eggs.
well now the eggs have gone but the parents are still very protective over that area. the flower pot they laid them in seems empty and there seems to be a lot of waste around the outside of it.
can anyone suggest what may of happened or if the may of moved the fry.
thanks ross |

Haven't kept JD but my experience of american cichlids is that they move their wrigglers to a pre dug pit fairly close to the spawn site. If they are anything like salvini, they will take on anything to protect their spawn and would rather fight and die than leave them. Good luck with them and keep us posted. HTH |

do you think there could be any other likely causes as i am struggling to find the wrigglers |

If you've not bred cichlids before, the waste outside the spawn site may be the wrigglers. They really don't amount to much, just an egg with a head and a tail and they stay on the bottom in a clump that looks like mulm.If the JDs are being very defensive over a particular spot, that's where they'll be.The parent fish will keep going down and moving them around and cleaning around them.Again,i've not kept JD but the above is my experience with a fair few american cichlids.Cichlid-forum.com for a definitive answer. |

ok thanks very much for your advice.
how long generally is it before they become active? adn i will know for sure because at the minute the mess around them which could be the wrigglers does not seem active |

It would be more likely they would move away if the wrigglers weren't there, they should be free swimming in a week from hatching although they try to swim after a couple of days. |

As far as i know yes, once hatched or whilst hatching they will be moved into a pit dug by the male and guarded by both parents. And you don't sound stupid! if you never ask you never find out! |

does sound like you have fry but they would be dark and tiny. in my experience when the eggs are gone the fish dont protect the area. give it a few days and see what happens. if you have a sponge filter then give the sponge a squeeze over the area and the fry will feed on the gunk. not too much mind just 4-5 drops |
