Can tanks (goldfish) be cycled without using ammonia and only with aeration?

Cheers!

I dont think so Mac. If you are not going to use ammonia or one or two small fish (depending on size of tank) - then mature gravel or filter media from an established tank can be used. But you may not have access to this?

I was advised once, that you can also put some flaked food into the uninhabitated tank and that will enable some kind of cycling process to take place (but not sure how effective this is or how much food to use and how long it takes)

Try this link for advice

Hope it helps. There plenty people on here that can advise on cycling.

Most important thing to remember is to not rush it too much and end up with dead or diseased gold fish coz your set up hasnt cycled enough.

even mature gravel will be pointless unless theres ammonia for the bacteria to initally feed on. the fishless cycle basically means instead of putting fish in the water to add ammonia you add the ammonia yourself either by the way of rotting food (prawns are ideal) or urine, or ammonia if you can get it (hard to get in the UK unlike the states) aeration will only break the waters surface and in turn let air in to the water itself for the fish to breathe

Welcome back Lex!

Mac - any organic matter that will decompose and undergo the 'ammonification' process will cure/cycle the tanks. Usual 6-8 weeks for a coldwater setup (with filter).

Small bits of cooked chicken or ham will also do the trick.

Thanks D.R

so looks like the best advice so far is bits of food.

Mac - are you aware that for all this you will need test kits for ammonia and nitrite? About £7 each in my experience, but well worth it it if you want to get it right at the end of the day.

I have tried a few kits. My favourite are Aquarium Pharmaceuticals for the NITRITE as you get a few more tests for your money and NUTRAFIN for the AMMONIA.
