Posted ok i finally got there
22-05-2006
19:21 by frozenball
i was told to take my time i certainly did that , i have just this afternoon finished setting it all up the set up consists of

juwel rio 400
juwel lighting bar 2 x 40w daytime bulbs
interpet 2 x 55w compact lighting (blues)
internal juwel filter 1500lph
external ehime wet and dry 2000lph ( i think )
deltec mce600 skimmer (2000lph)
seio 1100 pwer head on constant (4400lph)
3 x maxijet mj750 (670lph on wave)
Natural wave block for maxijets
300w juwel heater
Vectron 25w uv
refractometer
digital temp display with warning

i have set it up on two 4way blocks so there is one lighting system and one filter system on each of the blocks just in case it ever trips out the mains . i have just started the ro unit and it will take around 2 days to fill then i will mix the reef crystals i have ( around 13kg needed for first time )When i have the right level of salt in the water my plan is to buy 40kg of live rock. Then attach a fluval 204 i already have to mature to set up the quarntine tank ( do inverts need the quarntine too)

my question is have i missed anything or have i forgoten stuff or could i improve anything i already have .

thanks mark

it looks a bit dangerous to me i tried to put drip loops wherever possible but hopfully i will have no drips

why u need external filters if you are using live rock they will conflict and filters will produce nitrates

Don't fill the tank completely until you get the live rock in there as this will displace water and you'll be waisting money on salt down the drain.

thanks for that craig i have been told this by a few people and others have said it will be fine as long as it is well maintained but if it does start causing problems the plan is to remove the media and just use them purly as pumps , i dont like to rely on just one meathod of filtration.

billysfc im going to fill the tank because my plan is to run the not needed ro water mixed with salt to a quarntine tank (2ft proberble) and i got a nice big 25kg reef crystals which i will need 13kg + for first set up and i want to try to keep the main display and the quarntine tanks waters to simular parameters

thanks guys

Hi Frozenball, well done mate, looks like you have a good set up there. I think you are right to run externals as well, it will take months before the living rock is mature enough to filter your tank and lile you say, you can always just take the media out a few months down the line. Good luck!

im new to all of this but i have gone through life and been taught to expect the worst to happen , thats why im using the internal / external and liverock maybee it will all go horrible wrong but hey , im going to give it a go

deejdave not sure what you are on about with the live rock if you buy fully cured live rock how can it take months to mature it is mature. Admittedly you couldn't chuck all the fish you want in straight away as the bacteria will need to build up gradually to accomaodate the extra bioload but to say it would take months and that you are better off using canisters as well is a nonsense when you consider it will take the canisters just as long to mature as it will for the bacterial population on the live rock to grow. Very strange comment for you deejdave.

Frozenball I would also make sure you have a phosphate remover in there from the start perhaps scrap all the juwel media and just chuck the rowaphos in a mesh bag in there.

Other than our disagreement on the externals which is understandable it is a big leap of faith trusting live rock to do all the work your set up sounds pretty *** good.

One thing to note when placing the live rock keep in mind ledges for positioning corals as well as maintaining good water flow around the rock the maxi jets will be very handy for this especially on a wave set up. Also keep in mind a few quite spots current wise as some corals prefer low flow rates but most will be happy getting a right battering. Those corals that excrete a mucus layer every so often need a good flow rate to blast it off of them sarcophyton being one. Corals like cladielia prefer a high flow rate but are happy in a low flow rate as they excrete mucus every night as they shrink for the night and then tank on water in the morning this keeps their mucus relatively fluid when compared to sarcophytons that come off in thick mats its pretty disgusting.

Incidentally once the live rock is in expect a small amount of die back this is normal and will have a slight effect on nitrate levels I had a 5 ppm spike about a week after adding 20 kilos of ultra grade rock from stm. Its back down to 0.5 ppm now incidentally no externals on this set up!

Getting good rock is well worth it though tyhis ultra rock form stm is covered in coral polyps.

agreed on the live rock being good quality i currently working on a supplier from the usa . His rock is not just covered with polps etc but also corals and livestock but i dont know if it would survive the jorney and its ever so slightly cheaper . I have been reading alot of rports that the fiji rock is not what it used to be quality wise so i may just buy little bits from all over but i am thinking about putting base liverock in there for the cost issue

the external filter , i bought it so i want to use it lol and with it being a wave like outflow on it i thought it would be good to create current , if it causes problems then i will simply remove the media and let it run empty

rowaphos i was going to use in the deltec skimmer as there is a little chamer especially there for it

thanks alan your a star , help me loads !

just need a test kit now not sure where to get one but i want one that has all of the tests in one for starters

Go for salifert kits they don't do an all in one package though you have to buy them all individually.

Have a look at www.1st4aquatics.co.uk

I think they sell all the salifert kits in one package costs about £100 though but well worth it these kits are leagues above the rest.

the reason i wanted to go for all in one is that im not sure what testing kits to buy to start with also the same with additives like marine snow ,plankton , and calcium additves could you list advisable ones please

www.1st4aquatics.com sorry got the website wrong.

As a minimum you will need to test calcium, alkalinity (carbonate hardness), ph, nitrate, nitrite, phosphate.

In addition to this I would keep an eye on magnesium as this depletes rapidly and low levels can result in a calcium crash.

Iodine is worth noting although I am a little dubious about kit accuracy on this the salifert seems to be the best choice again iodine depletes rapidly but you need a kit that will test for all of the iodine derivatives and the salifert does this.
