STUPID ?? Feeding inverts |

Ok, I've heard of people putting a spoonfull of sugar into their RO water before topping up for evapouration every now and then. This is supposedly as the sugar provides a great soarce of carbohydrate for the filter bacteria and helps to strengthen the biological filter.
But what about feeding the inverts ???
We can all go and spend £ 10 on a tiny bottle of what is basically liquidsed fish, so our filter feeding friends can filter the water and remove the suspended proteins from the water column to feed.
Now for the stupid bit.
Instead of buying a very expensive emulsion of protein, why not feed them with skimmed milk.
How many of you are thinking that I've lost the plot ???
But think a little, milk is basically an emulsion of proteins that are perfectly held in suspension, not only that but it contains perfectly dissolved bioavailable calcium.
I'm also sure that the skimmer will quite happily remove it from the water column.
Please remember that this is just an idea that I've been pondering. I've never tried it.
I thought I'd air the idea here to see what other people think.
So am I LOCO, or does it make sence. |

Proper invert food such as the KENT products are not liquified fish! They are a suspension of macroalgaes and organisms filtered out so you only get particles of the right micron size for your inverts to eat... we can all come up with clever plans to save a few quid but i'm afraid you get what you pay for in life, if you wanna do things properly buy the right stuff! |

Certainly did not try this out. It was just an idea I had about two years ago.
Any way no matter how stupid an idea it was, people said that thomas eddison was a nutcase when he recorded sound.
How many of you guys have a CD player ???
But on a brighter note, I went to the national marine aquarium today. Very nice it was, but useless if you're interested in inverts. In the reef tank they had a pussey coral, some yellow polyps a clam and some buttons. waiste of a trip if you want to see corals.
But I visited my ex marine shop friend who lives down that way and came back with a large organ pipe, a small naturally occuring frag off his medusa, some mushroom anemones and some lovely little purple anemones. The anemones I gave him when I had my last tank amd they've multiplied to about 20. He's a little annoyed at them as they seem to like living amongst his acroporas. Any way I've got some back and I don't mind too much what they do as they are so pretty. |
