I have just bought a Rio 240, I am leaving the original filter box in there and an also running a Pro 2 2026 External with Eheim Ehfi Ball things And Ceramic Media.
What I want to know is, what is the best media to put in the Rio filter, standard fluval pads? Ehfi Bio balls, Alfragrog, or plastic Bio balls?
I am setting up for Malawi/Tangas....
Any thoughts much appreciated. |

Tartinjock, in my experience running the internal is a lot more work, more expensive and needs a lot more maintenance than an internal. Im also a firm believer that internals are the causes for certain diseases (dont quote me on this) and snails loves living in internals...
In my opinion id rip the internal out and with your pro 2 20226 External (which would do a great job!) id use the money you would have spend every month or two on new media and just buy a smaller cheaper external. For the price of externals these days its hardly worth messing around with the internals.
Furthermore the added advantage of ripping the internal out is the extra space. It doesnt look like much but it does make a big difference and more room to place decor in, and no unsightly blox box in the corner.
But like i said... my opinion... |

My setup at the moment I have the spray bar at one end and the syphon tube at the other, I have heard that they should be at the same end.....Does it matter? |

mine is that way aswell. as long as its in the corner (where there is less water movement) i doesnt matter id think.
Ive got two externals running and both are versus visa... if u know what i mean... |

Hello Tartin,I would remove the internal as CLL says,a second external would be good filled with a piece of sponge at bottom then a buffering media like calcium plus or coral gravel. The spray bar should be at the opposite end to the intake,a power head for extra water movement will also be good.I read earlier that you want to use glass substrate, not sure about that as Malawis are diggers, and sift sand through their gills, could I suggest silver sand,it is more natural and totally safe. Also I would not mix Malawis and Tanganyikans together, although a lot of people do. |
