hi all i set up my first tank (tropical) 7 days ago ... i went along to my local pet shop today and had the water checked, i was told it was fine and was best starting with tetras...so i bought 6 little tetras , , oh yes my tank is 2 and a half foot long... about three hours after introducing the fish to there new home one of them went mad it started darting about turning upside down and trying to jump out of the tank...this lasted about ten mins then it died...the rest seem fine but im now a little worried any advice would be great..my filter is the fluval 2...the water temp is about 27 if you need any more info i will be happy to give it.. i am very new to all this with no experience so please be gentle...thanks all |

hi wayne
7 days seems very quick to let the tank mature abit, sometimes transporting fish to a new tank upsets them and theres allways the chance you may lose one to shock,so just keep an eye on them, but i would leave it another week or two before getting more fish.
goodluck

ive been told i should do a partial water change a week after introducing my fish to there home...the advice was to get my water ready the day b4 leave it stand overnight to get the temp up and also add a teaspoon of salt to it b4 i put it in the tank...i am also informed that i wouldnt need to treat the water if i leave it overnight???? is this the case...oh and thanks jamie i will leave it a week or so b4 getting more fish...i think the fish that died may have been ill when purchased as my wife noticed a lot of dead fish in there tanks so i wont be going to pets at home for anymore fish...thanks all |

you are going through the nitrogen cycle at the moment so you should feed very lightly once a day
i wouldnt advise you add any salt to your tank as some fish dont like it and it can stress them out
run the tank with the fish you have for another week then find a good local shop and get them to test your water or if you feel confident enough that you can test it yourself and act accordingly to the results of the tests
IF YOU REALLY FEEL THE NEED TO GO OUT AND BUY SOMETHING FISHY BUY A GOOD BOOK |

thanks rob...i will take your advice and wait another week .. i will also buy a good book regards keeping fish....just to add i watched the third fish die (i now only have 3 left out of 6)it seemed to go to the top of the tank a lot and its mouth was opening and closing very quickly this went on for about 5 mins b4 it coughed it...i read this could simply be stress?? |

i think you could be doing with an airstone in the tank ,do your fish look pale coloured if so it could be tetra disease very common:) |

HMM i had an airstone in mate i took it out the remaining fish seem happier ... i have the fluval 2 underwater filter so i think there is plenty oxygen in there but thanks anyway..loads of bubbles in the water ....i hope the fish that r left will survive they seem fine so fingers crossed...im sure i will update if i have more probs,,.. thank u all very much |

is the gravel new what is ph have you checked it it sounds like new tank sindrome would not put salt in tank as it will kill backtria your tank will mature in up to six weeks do not add to many fish all at once as new tank water will kill them I would weight few weeks before adding any more standing water 2 days works for me as I keep disus fish have done for 4 years kept fish 20 years now |

You did float the fish before releasing them into the tank didn't you? You didnt mention it so thought I'd check. And you said you'd just set the tank up. Was it new? or second hand - because if you cleaned it up you can only use water - nothing else - even traces of washing up liquid etc in the water could be fatal to the fish. Gasping at the surface is generally something wrong in the water - not enough oxygen or something poluting it etc. Best of luck hun |

A few things spring to mind.
Firstly get on the practical fishkeeping site www.practicalfishkeeping.co.uk there are some really good bits of info on here for the beginner.
Leaving the water to stand over night will not remove the chlorine and if your local water authority uses chloramine you could leave it a month and it would make no difference. You need a good dechlorinator, I keep fresh water stingrays and use Stresscoat but to be fair any off the shelf tap water conditioner should do but make sure it deals with both chlorine and chloramine another product that springs to mind is ammo lock.
If you are not using a dechlorinator you will be destroying the bacteria in the tank every time you do a water change.
Another thing to look for is a product called stresszyme or some other bacteria culture for boosting your filters, these things are controvertial but I have had a lot of success with stresszyme.
Check this website www.animal-house.co.uk you will be able to find everything you need under the aquarium section it also makes a good reference point for comparing against your local fish shop.
Another thing to remember is never wash any of the filter media or sponges under the tap use water taken from the tank if you wash it under the tap you will be destroying the bacteria that deal with ammonia and nitrite.
When keeping fish always bear this in mind you are not managing fish you are managing a sewage works that is basically what a fish tank and its filtration system is.
I would forget the salt I have never used salt in over 20 years of fish keeping it does have its place but it shouldn't be necessary there are much better solutions to be found than salt. |

allan use tap water conditoner by API its stronger than stress coat so it works out cheaper a 120mm bottle treats aprox 9000ltr of water |

Cheers Rob I will keep my eye out for it I usually buy in bulk works out much cheaper but if I can buy this API stuff in bulk it will be even cheaper still. |

np allan its made by the same company as stresscoat so your local stockist of that should be able to get it for you if they cant tell em to contact the rena rep and they can get it by special order |
