each goldfish needs 10 gallons of water to stop it being poisoned by its own waste. you have a 12 gallon tank so that would be 1 not 2 |

i think 2 small fancys will be fine , you dont have to do every thing by the book i would say 2 because how would you like swimming round on your own , just keep your feeding down to every other day , alternate your foods give them a varied diet , and do a 15-20% water change every 2 weeks , its funny a lot of peeps have problems with thier tanks (cloudy water) because they mess around with thier tanks too often , OH SORRY I SHOULD SAY "IMO" |

12 gallons is to small for a fancy golfish they arte heavy polluters therefore to do well require a tank of at least 20 gallons and a powerful filter water quality also needs to be very good for fancy goldfish which contrary to popular belief I kept fancies for about 8 years I only suffered problems when the tank was to small and the filtration was inadequate for them when the filter would normally have been adequate for say tropical fish.
If this is a first tank I would suggest going for tropical it is far easier.
Possible stock would be small tetras such as cardinals a few cory's such as panda corys and perhaps 4 honey gouramis and a couple of otocinclus and 4 leopard danios.
Set up would be as follows.
Filter adequate for a 20 gallon tank on the 12 gallon a fluval or eheim internal filter would suffice nicely for this.
A heater rated for the size of tank set it to 24 c.
Sand substrate about a cm deep this will keep maintenance needs low.
Java fern on bog wood this plant is very easy to keep under normal flourescents a single tropical flourescent will suffice with this plant.
A small air pump and air stone in the opposite back corner to the filter.
Stocking would be as follows:
4 leopard danios these are very tough fish and would go in first to start the maturing process when these fish are added chuck in a healthy dollop of bacterial culture I have had good results with stress zyme apparently tetra are just about to lauch a product that will supposedly mature a tank over night so this is probably worth a go.
When these fish are in monitor the water quality of the tank watching for an ammonia and nitrite spike followed by the build up of nitrate once nitrate is building up well and ammonia and nitrite are undetectable more fish can be added but gradually. Wait at least a month before adding any more fish.
Incidentally this new tetra product apparently removes the usual ammonia and nitrite spike but I would still test the water to be sure.
Once the Danios are settled I would add 4 honey gouramis 2 male and 2 female. Or just go for 4 male.
A month after this add 4 panda cory's.
A month after this add 10 cardinal tetras and that is the tank stocked obviously during this time the water should be monitored and every time fish are added additional bacteria should be added.
If you intend to go down the goldfish route you will have to insure the filter is active before any fish are added as fancy goldfish more often than not are not tough enough to survive the maturation process probably down to the inbreeding needed to produce the unusual body shape they certainly are not as robust as the common goldfish equally their dietary requirement is not simple flake food they need a varied diet of frozen foods as well as dried foods to prevent constipation which is another common problem which is as a result of the inbreeding causing deformities in the gut.
It should also be noted that fancy goldfish can attain 6" or more in length this is not including the tail far to big for a 12 gallon tank. The other difficulty with such a small tank would be the heat in the summer with a large tank the reduced oxygen levels are not such a problem for coldwater fish but in a small tank there is just not enough oxygen available to the fish when the temp could be nudging 30 C. |

Hiya, I think (personally) that if fishwife has her heart set on goldfish then why not. Exactly how long is your tank fishwife? If its 1 foot long then nothing should be housed in there but if its 2- 2 and 1/2 foot then 2 fish will be fine. I had about 5 fancies inlcuding a 5 year old pompom, they even started to breed.Goldfish (inlcuding fancies) are very poplular pets, and children keep them successfully. They are avialbe to all, so why cant all house them in what they can afford. just because you have taken most of your time and effort (USUALLY) into fish, does not mean you cannot keep them if you arent professhional. Do me a favour, she asked how many goldfish she can keep, if you are going to anser her, answer her question.and please do me another favour, dont hit back to this in an agressive manor, as I simply putting my view forward, and everybody is allowed their opinion, so I did not mean to cause offence, if so, sorry. |

Jessica - its not the tank dimensions that are the factor, its the capacity. 12 gals is not a big tank so the advise given was sound and will hopefully stop a lot of dissapointment when things start to go wrong, as they almost inevitably will.
Its nothing to do with being proffesional, just basic common sence facts based on experience |

jessica, children also kill a lot of goldfish across the country. the length of the tank makes no odds. 12 gallons is 12 gallons. very sound, expert advise has been given here. |

I would say 1 goldfish being fed every other day and at least 25%weekly water changes would be ok. |
