I have a 60L biorb - up and running 9months (my first ever tropical tank). Two of my ribbon tail guppies, a flying fox and a rainbow fish have all died over the last 3 weeks. The nitrite, nitrate and ammonia levels are all fine, but the pH is 8.4. Could this be what killed them? And what can I do? Could it be the bogwood in the tank raising the pH? Any advice would be grtefully recieved.

bogwood won't raise it, do you have any shells or rocks in there

just the substrate stones that came with the tank

check your tap supply if any work has been done on the mains supply down the road this will affect your p.h if it is high get some bottled water for a while until it settles ro get a good quality adjuster

any recommendations for a good pH adjuster?

proper p.h 7 this you will have to make in a bucket before you use it also contains phosphate so you may get algae or use a nutrafin p.h adjuster which is probably easier to use for you you just add drops to the water in the orb

thank you!
do you think it may be the pH that caused the problems? Or is there something else I should be looking for?

if all your levels are fine i would say yes over time it would have done it
my marine are on 8.3 and most trops are on 7

personally i think that messing with your PH is more trouble than its worth. its hard to keep it stable and fish are better off in a stable PH than one that fluctuates. my advice to you would be to look for fish that like a high PH. you'll probably find that you can keep and even breed some fantastic fish in your water.

consider african cichlids they would thrive. and mollies may be suited but would need salt. if you do decide to try the africans make sure you research which fish match others. our african expert "ray" will be a gold mine of good advice in that area.

just think its only a biorb and does not have room or surface area so watch what you put in !

did the fish show any symptoms before they died? (like staying near the surface?)

i am starting to think that guppies these days are bred specifically to "drop dead" at certain points in time, be it 1 week, 3 weeks or 3 months

i say this out of frustration Sophie as to how "weak" a lot of guppies are these days. If i buy them from shops, i always look for the least colourful and least fancy ones. They last longer in my experience
