i've heard you have so many inches of fish per tank size ????
i have a 6'x2'x2' tank
so how many "inches" is allowed for a normal stocked tank |

Not really, all depends on filtration and type of fishes.... |

they say 1 inch of fish to every gallon, but as jake says it depends on setup and fish. |

its the surface area that has a big part to play .....if i remember back to my first tank (36x12)surface area i was advised on 12 square inches per fish so i could have kept 36 " of fish
36 - 1" fish
18 - 2" fish as a guide
if you work on your tank with 12" surface area per fish yours would hold 144" of fish
that being said it would need perfect filteration .....and does also depend on what type of fish u plan to keep?
hope this helps

Surface area has nothing to do with it.
That formula comes from the olden days when we didn't have air pumps or water movement devices to facilitate gaseous exchange. We used to do the so many inches of fish to surface area to work out how much oxygen could be relied upon etc.
Marine tanks usually have lots of water surface stimulation provided by water movement and a protein skimmer that provides loads of air.
There is no real way to know. It all depends on how well your equipment and filters look after the water.
I never even consider this as I have always preferred corals to fish and therefore stock low so I can keep better water quality.
The only real way to tell is to monitor ammonia and nitrite levels and see if they are being kept in check.
Every tank will be different regardless of surface area or water volume.
