i have read in places that reef tanks need rest periods how long should this be and do i turn of all my power heads or leave one running

The only rest period in the sea would be at the tide change so say 10-20 minutes no movement every 4-6 hours would do it but most people don't bother and let their pumps blast away 24/7.

Good idea though I am considering adding another seio stream pump to my tank long way off now though (see annoyed wife thread) and replicating the tide that would incorporate a 10 - 20 minute slow period before the blasting begins again from the opposite end of the tank.
