i have sucess fully drilled holes in my tank using a cheap tile drillbit from b+q (about £12 i think which is better than 69 for a proper glass one, i made i guide using acryic cutting a hole out of that first and then slowly grinding the whole through using lots of water squirted by my mate. i can get 6 or seven holes out of a bit before the diamonds are all gone and after that i use grinding compound untill the grouves wear out on the hole saw

Good question Robert!
Good tips on drilling nige, do you have the Cat no. of the drill bit from B+Q, what sizes can you get them in. I have only been able to track more expensive bits.

I have used a drill press, if you build a dam around the drilling area with clay or kids plasticine (spelling?)and fill with a small amount of water or oil (vegetable or cooking oil to prevent toxicity). This keeps the temperature down when grinding and helps stops cracking or fractures.

i got mine on ebay. 4 for 7 quid. did the same as nige, in fact when you buy the kit they give instructions on how to do it. takes a while and best to go slow. must keep it wet or it'll get too hot and blunt the saw.

i cant remember, but its in the same section as the holesaws they come in sizes from 6mm up to 64 i think, i used a 38mm bit for my tank connector the other thing to remember is that you are grinding a hole not cutting so dont put pressure on the drill, let it do all the work, the other thing i can highly recommend that you make a guide out of wood or acrylic, i used plaster board to great effect a couple of times, and constanly squirt cool not cold water onto it to make sure that you dont break the glass fro temperature shock

Cheers Nige. I was suggesting the drill press as you can set the drill stop by a fraction of a mm. A trip to B+Q after work then

Also, what sort of grinding compound is best and where do you obtain it?

um i used some i found in the garage when we moved there, i think its called diamond xxx
you wont need to use the compund with a new bit as they still have pleanty of the electroplated diamons on them so i wouldnt wory about it. just take your time, go slowly and remember to support the other side wit a piece of wood or something to prevent splintering. oh yea, one more thing when you are starting the hole you will find that the bit skates around on the glass. so i recomend a guide.

hope this helps
