hello all. as some of you may remember I decided to dabble a bit into the keeping of marines, something Iv'e come to regret quite a number of times over the last 10 weeks, things are going reasonably well apart from some conflicting advise given from different fish stores around my area, ANYWAY!!! recently I have on occassions found a empty crab husk that I pressumed to be a dead hermit crab, no hermits have died so I then pressumed it to be the hermits shedding there skin, this morning I found another one and only this time it was moving, I switched the blue light on briefly to grab a propper look and there was a 1/2 inch bright yellow crab looking at me, Iv'e not bought it, I thought I had seen all there was to see in my tank, Iv'e had to strip my tank down twice to clean it and have never seen it, what is it, its got me stumped and typing yellow marine crab in the google search has not brought anything up. cheers guys and gals.

Whats your set up Tony perhaps we can offer some advice on here.

The crab you are seeing is it a hermit? Generally speaking any crab other than a hermit is going to be trouble but it would be impossible to id one with out having a good look at it and even then the chances are slim.

Either way though I would wait and see it would be impossible to say it would be a disaster inhabitant without knowing what it is.

Tony, sometimes when a crab or (crustaeceon) sheds it's carapace in it's moulting process, the "new" version can be slightly differing in colour for the first few days whilst the shell "hardens", which may be the case here. Only time will tell.

Hello Alan and graham, I am still stuck with the 2ft tank that I posted you some photos of a month or so ago, still yet to set up the 4ft but its a case of moving some large malawi tanks around 1st and getting organised (bit slow moving these tanks I know but kids, lack of free time and sickness has haltered any progress). I could accept it being a hermit crab, but all the hermit crabs I have purchased are still in view and this crab is of a different shape??? now I have seen it I will keep the camera handy for a snapshot.
