Hi guys,
Can anyone help? I purchased a sexed pair of texas cichlids last week, stunning fish and not a mark on them, the best i've seen to be honest...they are in a south american set up, Parrots, Severums,Oscars, convicts, But... the two texas i purchased are really aggresive towards my large parrot, Whenever she goes near there half of the tank they go crackers, my parrot has had a few nips on the fins which i feel is from the texas, is there anything i can do? or should i split the texas up? |

Texas cichlids do have an aggressive reputation, especially if they are about to breed. maybe they feel threatened by the parrot.
you may have to rehouse the parrot, or get a divider in place.
have you tried re-arranging the rockwork to break up the tank into distinct territories?
How about showing us a picture of the texas cichlids |

Hi,
thanks for replying, The tank is set out with ocean rock, there are more hiding places than can be seen by the eye, amd i try to move things once a week, the male texas is showing really bright colours to the back end and is constantly jumping in front of the female, so i do feel they are ready to breed, But i'm attached to my parrot, I've had it nearly three yrs! I will post a pic tom, I only get access to a PC 9-5 mon-fri, but thanks for the help, as you can see i'm pretty new to this forum! |

Hi Ryan,
Texas are pretty easy going as cichlids go until they are ready to breed,my last pair were strange, the male was constantly beat up by the female,to the point that after he had fertilized the eggs i had to remove him as she would have killed him,i'm sure |

To be honest texas are not really suitible for your set up long term.
First off they are central american cichlids, not south american. And generally I would not rate them as good tank mates for any of yours, even convicts due to the size difference.
The problem is they seem pretty docile until they mature as darren says, at which point they get very territorial - I am afraid it will only get worse.
Also how big is your tank, a pair of texas will take over a 4 foot tank even when young, so unless it is 6 foot or bigger I would move them asap.
Finally, which Species do you have? Carpinte or Cyanoguttatum? |

Paddy,
I have a 8ft aquarium, Huge it is, with over 60kg of ocean rock so hiding places are everywhere, the problem doesn't lie with the convicts, to be honest the texas dont bother anything else other than my largest parrot, my convicts aren't much smaller than the texas, But as i say whenever my large parrot goesn near the bottom right hand side of the tank where the texas are situated they go bonkers! I have just set up a 3ft aquarium, I will leave it a week and move the texas, because i'm sure they want to breed, i have attached a pic

Im no ciclid expert but it does sound like they have taken that corner up as their breeding ground.
U say u move your rocks around once a week. Is it a big move u do every week or a small one? My point im coming to is if ur doing changes once a week it might upset them aswell. BUT what find with new fish, if you do a BIG change arround so all of the fish can re establish their own teritory and see what happens. And if he still goes for the parrot....
But like i said im no cichlid expert... |

I do a small change round and a small water change, But when i purchased my texas i informed the guy what i had at the shop and he said there well suited together, I will give it a go tonight!
Thanks love x |
