You can buy live-mud that is apparently populated by helpful nitrate and nitrite eating bacteria. the idea is that you have it in a lighted sump and grow algae in it.

... i think

Further to what Yanton has said. Basically it is a sump containing mud (miricle mud from underworld) and algae and usually bioballs. The sump is lit 24 hours a day to allow the algae to photosynthesize all the time, reducing nitrates in the water. As well as other more complex reactions In this system you do not need a skimmer.

I believe you can get some hang on versions that may not need drilling.

Miracle mud is basically a mixture of minerals that will help caulerpa thrive and will also gradually dissolve replenish trace minerals in the reef.

In theory when used in combination with live rock in the tank no other filtration will be needed and nitrates can be kept very low.

I can vouch for the benefits of an algae scrubber.

My tank contains about 25-30 kilos of live rock and I have an upstream sump with a Deep sand bed measuring 33" by 7" deep and 6" wide with caulerpa growing on top I don't use miracle mud though.

Currently I have a nitrate reading of 0ppm and phosphates barely detectable I use rowaphos just before the flow back into the main tank.

In theory you don't need to drill a tank for a down stream sump if you use an overflow box but these won't fit on all aquariums its down to the size of your bracing bars. With an upstream sump which is basically a tank on a shelf above the main tank the main tank does not need to be drilled only the upstream sump will need to be drilled.

I have a flow rate of about 1000 litres per hour going through my sump.

I carry out a water change once or twice a month depending on whether or not I think the tank needs it currently it is once a month solely for the purpose of replenishing trace minerals that cannot be tested for.
